WEATHER--This week has begun with quite a soaker and Sunday night was pretty wild with lots of wind along with those downpours, so it was not a night to be out and about, that's for sure; although you may have had to chase down a garbage can lid or two if you didn't have them fastened on good! After a tumultuous night, we awoke to sunshine on Monday morning, and that was much more to everyone's liking. It appears that the rest of this whole week is going to be on the damp side except for next Monday, but the forecast can change from hour to hour this time of year, and from town to town, so I guess we'll just see what we get; and hope that it winds up drier than wetter!

On the bright side, we really do need the rain, so hopefully we won't suffer any catastrophic wildfires or water shortages in our area in the upcoming days.

Those celebrating anniversaries this week are Stewart and Ginger Moonen, Allyx and Zak O'Conner, Kim and Jesse Stone, Chris and Lacey Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Justin Watkins and Jack and Sherrolin (Mace) Powell. Here's to fantastic anniversary celebrations for all of you!

Belated anniversary wishes go out to the Josh Giffords and Rene Westbrook and her husband, Wally, who celebrated their special days last Saturday. Sorry, I didn't know about them in time for last week's Eagle. Hope you had terrific days!

CAR SHOW--The weather may not have been the very best for a car show this past Saturday, but the car enthusiasts that showed up were still able to enjoy some sun breaks, so thankfully it wasn't all rain and sogginess while they were here. As anyone who has lived here very long can attest to, it can be raining in one spot and dry a few hundred feet away, so it really was an off and on day here and there, and those who did make it down here had a great time showing off their rides and sharing their car stories with their fellow classic and hot rod lovers. If you happen to be on Facebook, you can check out a nice little video put out by the Skamokawa Resort as the cars left town; pretty neat. Of course, we all love the sound of those rumbling engines!

MARKET GOODIES--If you missed going down to the Elochoman Slough Marina last Friday, I hope you're able to go this Friday, June 11, and with a little luck, it will be nice again. I hope you are able to stop by the WAAG booth and support them, and if you're in luck, they will once again have the huge brownies and the delicious blueberry scones. Oh my goodness, were they ever good! Other booths down there offered me a chance to do a little early Christmas shopping, so it was a great day to be out and about weather-wise and a great place to shop as well.

FLEA MARKET COMING UP--The monthly Flea Market at the Wahkiakum Co. Fairgrounds will take place June 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you have things to sell, you can also rent a table and make a little extra spending cash!

GRANGE REPEATS SALE--The Skamokawa Grange had a very successful sale last Saturday with folks coming in and out of the hall all day long, so that was good to hear as monies raised helps keep the doors open! Beings it was such a hit, they opted to go ahead and open the doors again at 9 a.m. this Saturday, June 12, and they hope you'll stop by as you go to the fairgrounds sale as well. They'll also close their sale at 3 p.m.

DFS AUCTION IS ENDING--If you're like most folks and get this paper on Thursday, then you still have a few days to take part in the Dollars For Scholars auction that is taking place right now. It ends at 8 p.m. on June 13, so check out: http://www.32auctions.com/MulePowerOnlineAuction. Do that ASAP if you want to help support this fund raising event for our WHS kids!

FLAG DAY--June 14 is "Flag Day" in our country. Both President Wilson (1916) and President Coolidge (1927) had asked to have June 14 observed as our National Flag Day and issued proclamations about it. However, it wasn't until Congress approved the idea on August 3, 1949, that President Truman actually signed it into law, so he usually gets the credit for making it happen. At any rate, this is the day that was chosen to commemorate the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

FARMERS MARKET--On Tuesdays, there's a group of folks who set up their goods inside the cow barn at the fairgrounds and it's always a surprise as to what you'll find there. Not only do they have plants and fruits and things, but they also have vendors selling aprons or fancy dish towels and soaps and things, so come on down to the fairgrounds once again and check and see if they've got something you're looking for.

FATHER'S DAY--The Sunday after next is June 20, Father's Day! I hope you kids will find a way to do something special for your Dad, and it doesn't have to be big and expensive things. Sometimes a hug and a hand-drawn card will wind up being the most precious thing a Dad could get from his children. I'm sure there will be dinner specials at our local restaurants for the occasion, so if you're able to treat your Dad out for a bite to eat, we hope you'll do so locally.

SUMMERTIME--Our summer solstice technically takes place at 8:31 p.m. on June 20, and it takes place between June 20 and 22 each year. The longest day of the year this year falls on Monday, June 21. This is because the North Pole is tilted towards the sun at about a 23.4 degree angle and the South Pole is then tilted away from it. At any rate, enjoy that "longest day."

VBS--Vacation Bible School will be held this year, so if you're interested in having your kids attend that, you'll need to get them registered. This is done online, and it looks like you would check out VBSMate.com to do that. It will be held at the River of Life Assembly of God Church on Main Street as you come into Cathlamet. The dates for VBS are from June 21-25, 12:30 to 3:30, so you should get registered as soon as possible.

SUMMER LUNCHES--Don't forget that there is a Summer Food and Summer Fun program beginning June 21 and lasts until July 29. The "Grab & Go" lunches will be available from Noon to 12:30 at three different places: the J.A. Wendt School parking lot, the Norse Hall on Puget Island or at the fairgrounds in Skamokawa.

DON'T GO HUNGRY--We are very fortunate in our county to have several food sources available to those in need, so there's no reason to go hungry here. Three sources are in Cathlamet: Wah. Food Bank (out the Elochoman) distributes food on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 and you can call them at 360-795-3497; Helping Hands on SR 4 by the church/clothing bank on Thursdays from 10 until 3, as well as the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, and you can call to verify that 360-795-0425; the St. Catherine Catholic Church on Columbia Street on the first and third Wednedays from 9 a.m. to Noon, call 360-795-8725 and on the west end of the county, you can go to the West End Food Pantry in Rosburg on Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m.

PUGET ISLAND SALE--The annual Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale is fast apporaching, so I hope you have your name on the list that goes on the map that is put out. June 25, 26 and 27 are the dates for the sale. Contact Sandie York at 360-795-0328 or 360-430-0951 to get listed for a small fee to help cover the cost of the maps; and if you have any PIGYS signs leftover from 2019, she'd sure love to have those returned to her.

VISITING--I know a real happy Momma this week, as Becky Ledtke told me that her only daughter, Valle Mae is coming to town for a visit so she's very excited about that. My guess is that her Dad, Jerry, is happy too, but Mom seemed to be over the moon about the "I'm coming home for 10 days" news, so she's extremely excited to have her Floridian daughter make a trip to the West Coast. Have fun, ladies!

NO NAMES--We have several folks in our area that have been dealing with serious health issues, and while they wish to remain anonymous, I just want to let them know that those of us who are aware of their health problems, are certainly thinking of them. To those that are spouses or caregivers, we feel for you as well, as we know it's not easy to watch those that you love, suffer so much. We send our most caring thoughts your way during these difficult times.

OUT OF THE PAST--This year back in 1946, the first three days were nice but then it turned wet and by Flag Day, June 14, it was a terribly stormy day with lots of wind and rain and it was also bitterly cold. Thankfully, the last day of the week, June 16, just so happened to have been Father's Day that year and it was a real nice day. The week began with the Business and Professional Women's Club holding their meeting at Fleda Whitten's place in Skamokawa and everyone had a wonderful time. Grandma Elsie found her house to be very nice and very interesting. The bad news that happened on that day was the "Nystrom shooting" that took place in Skamokawa!

Donna and Gene Healy headed to their Grandma Everest's house where they enjoyed singing along to her piano playing. The following day, cousins Gene and Ralph Pedersen got paid $3.25 each for the bark that they had peeled; they were very happy fellows!

The Everest's had family come to visit after traveling from the Oregon coast and on their way home to Seattle, as Sid and Della Everest and Alda Hellum came by for a nice stay. Mrs. Hellum really enjoyed the trip, as her father, Cecil Everest (brother of Ralph Everest) had logged the land 40 years prior, and which is now Tongue Point. She was able to recall a lot of the local landmarks from when she was a young girl in that area.

A new addition came into the Cathlamet area when Bertha Ackerman had a baby girl on June 15, which was a cold and rainy Saturday that year.
