The Cape Horn fire which began in the early morning hours of August 7 is considered to be under a status of control, according to Jeff Bortner, the Department of Natural Resources Wildland Fire District Manager for Pacific Cascade Region.

The scene of the 5-10 acre fire, about five miles east of Cathlamet, will continue to be monitored for a couple weeks before its status is changed to out.

The suspected cause is fireworks, Bortner said.

Bortner advised people to exercise extra caution while traveling through the area for the foreseeable future in a story in the August 11 edition of The Eagle.

“The vegetation has been holding the landscape in place,” he said. “Once fire disturbs a landscape, especially a landscape that steep, things will fall and roll down into the road.”
