Celebrated musician comes to Cathlamet

An award-winning composer-pianist will perform in Cathlamet as part of a long-planned reboot of a beloved Cathlamet landmark. Massachusetts-based Dan Kennedy will perform at the historic Pioneer Center, with its iconic white tower, as part of a tour that will take him to Oregon and California. This is Kennedy’s first ever visit to Cathlamet.

Kennedy and Pioneer Community Association President Suzanne Holmes have been in discussion for over four-and-a-half years to make the appearance a reality. Despite initial delays due to building renovations, and then the covid-19 pandemic, Kennedy consistently expressed a desire to perform in Cathlamet.

“Dan kept wanting to be here,” she said. “He’s going to be our inaugural act.”

Playing classically tinged solo piano compositions and a few renditions of well-known tunes, Kennedy has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Québec. He has released seven albums since his debut EP “Lantern,” produced by Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman, was released in 2007. Kennedy received a 2022 Global Music Award; with Ancient Voices, he received a 2022 Native American Music Award; and in 2019 he was the recipient of the Enlightened Piano Radio Album of the Year.

“The pain, the sadness, the joy, the love, the piano is how I try to make sense of it all,” he says.

Holmes praised Kennedy’s musicianship, referring the scale and movement of his compositions.

“He’s impressive,” she said. “It’ll be a good concert.”
