Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the last week, including:
October 14 1:23 a.m. A Cathlamet caller reported hearing a ship’s foghorn for five minutes. Sheriff’s deputies contacted the Coast Guard that confirmed that a ship had its horn stuck on for 15 minutes. 10:55 a.m. A homeowner in Deep River requested an abandoned vehicle left on their property be disposed of as a junk vehicle. Deputies checked into the matter and found that the vehicle did not qualify as junk and that the homeowner would have to pay to have it towed away. 8:56 p.m. A Puget Island caller reported two vehicles speeding on North Welcome Slough Road.
October 15 7:32 a.m. Several large chunks of debris were reported on Risk Road. 10:52 a.m. A Cathlamet resident reported unauthorized withdrawals from their bank account. 11:43 a.m. Deputies were requested to assist an Elochoman Valley resident who was locked out of their car. 6:26 p.m. A motorist west of Cathlamet reported a person driving erratically. The Washington State Patrol was notified. 9:13 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported that their neighbor’s dogs were trying to get to their chickens. The resident said that they were the same dogs that had previously killed part of their flock. Deputies found the dogs and returned them to the owner. No charges were filed.
October 16 1:55 a.m. Branches were reported blocking both lanes of SR4 just west of County Line Park. 12:32 p.m. A motorist reported almost being hit when a vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign northbound on the Birnie Slough bridge. 3:50 p.m. A storage facility called to report a travel trailer parked at their facility that they had not authorized to be there. 5:12 p.m. A Cathlamet resident requested assistance from the Cathlamet ambulance after feeling dehydrated from a possible case of food poisoning contracted on a trip outside the county. 5:32 p.m. A lost dog in the Cathlamet area was reported to the Sheriff's Office. The dog, a border collie/blue healer mix, can be identified by its red collar. 6:17 p.m. A caller reported finding an elderly person in the woods who was mushroom picking in the Mill Creek area. The person said that there were two other people in their party. The incident was shared with the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office who located the two other people. 8:31 p.m. A wallet was found at the Cathlamet Mini Mart and reported to the Sheriff's Office. 8:33 p.m. A solar phone charger was found in Cathlamet and turned into the Sheriff's Office. 9:23 p.m. An injured deer was reported in the Elochoman Valley.
October 17 8:24 a.m. The Washington State Patrol was notified that a large branch was blocking the westbound lane in the curves west of County Line Park. 10:48 a.m. A welfare check was requested by the caregiver of an elderly Puget Island resident who had not been able to contact their client. Sheriff’s deputies contacted the person and reported that they were fine. 4:17 p.m. Cathlamet emergency services responded to an elderly Puget Island person experiencing complications from diabetes. 5:05 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to an elderly Puget Island resident who was not feeling well. 8:53 p.m. Cows were reported loose on Ingalls Road in Skamokawa. The Sheriff’s department contacted the owner to let them know of the situation.
October 18 1:26 a.m. A caller reported someone at the ferry landing was looking into cars with a flashlight. The Sheriff’s department ran the license plate of the vehicle and found it was an employee of the ferry. 9:53 a.m. A welfare check was requested on an elderly Puget Island resident. 2:43 p.m. A Skamokawa homeowner reported a vehicle accident near their home. Sheriff’s deputies responded and found a vehicle being towed away from the scene. No property damage occurred and the motorists declined assistance. 3:38 p.m. A caller from Skamokawa reported multiple incidents of their neighbor’s cows on their property. Deputies informed the homeowner of the “livestock at large statute” and how to make claims for damages. 4:39 p.m. A wallet was reported lost at the Cathlamet Pharmacy.
October 19 5:40 p.m. A Puget Island caller reported a possible illegal burn to the Sheriff’s department. The Puget Island fire department responded but found the burn was being performed legally. 10:05 p.m. Cathlamet emergency services responded to a Cathlamet resident who had been burned by cooking oil. 10:19 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to a Westend resident who was experiencing dizziness.
October 20 7:44 a.m. Cathlamet emergency services responded to assist a possible overdose victim on Puget Island. The person declined transportation to the hospital. One person was taken into custody at the scene. 9:41 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to an elderly Cathlamet resident who had fallen. 4:17 p.m. A caller reported seeing a person sheltering in the Rosburg post office. 6:56 p.m. A Puget Island homeowner called the Sheriff’s department to report that their neighbor was not feeding their cattle. The person called the Sheriff's department again to report that the person was feeding their cows but that it was not done regularly. 7:41 p.m. A customer at a Cathlamet business reported being harassed by an intoxicated person. The caller left the business, but the owner saw the person on security camera. The Washington State Patrol responded.
