To The Eagle,
St. James Family Center (SJFC) is more than the blue daycare on Columbia. It’s a source of education, physical and emotional nourishment, structure and fun for kids. For families, it represents peace of mind. Knowing children are in a safe, caring environment allows adults to focus on work or other daily obligations. As health care consultant for SJFC, I have the unique opportunity to interact with preschoolers. Being around a room full of three to five year olds is a hoot. The level of energy, conversation, movement, laughter and, sometimes, tears vibrates in the classroom.
SJFC is a source for hearing and vision screening. Preschoolers are evaluated annually to see if they see and hear well enough to learn. I conduct the hearing screening and, this year, the Lion’s Club performed the vision screening. If kids have difficulties, they are referred for further evaluation. This is vital for assuring their ability to thrive in kindergarten. If they can’t see or hear their teacher, it will affect their success and enjoyment in school. It’s gratifying to see a child get glasses and ace the vision test the following year. This system is working.
SJFC develops and presents a variety of different learning modules. Last year, I presented on yoga, the heart, the lungs and nutrition. These involved floor exercises, stethoscopes and jogging, straws and balloons, and tiny appetizers with all the food groups. In April, I’ll be back to discuss growing and eating healthy food.
SJFC has been providing care and support to Wahkiakum County families for 40 years. Not only are they a resource for early education, they provide the only domestic violence (DV) shelter in the county. During these times of uncertain funding for education and DV services, it’s vital not to take SJFC for granted.
Please demonstrate your appreciation and support for SJFC by donating to the “40 for 40” campaign sponsored by the Board of Directors. Our goal is to raise $40,000 by the end of the year. Donating is simple. Just visit stjamesfamilycenter.org or drop a check off at the Bank of the Pacific (56 Main St.). Please dig deep and donate generously for this one time campaign.

SJFC board of directors vice chair
