Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Skamokawa News

WET START. It was a bit damp on Easter Sunday out here in West Valley, but I see folks in various parts of the county who seemed to have a bit more sunshine than we did on this holiday. Anyway, I’m happy that the Easter Egg hunts at the fairgrounds on Saturday wound up having a decent day, albeit a tad bit windy and cool at times, but that beats the rain! It also beats the areas east of us, which had sunshine one day, then snow, and even massive hail storms the next, causing extreme damage to hotel windows and car windshields and closing major highways/freeways. I won’t complain at all about our light rain showers. Here’s to some sunny days this week.

SALE THIS WEEKEND. There will be a huge garage sale this Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, though it won’t be held in a garage. It will be held at the Skamokawa Grange Hall at 18 Fairgrounds Road here in Skamokawa. This is a two-day sale, so you should check it out between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on either day, or both days. Find yourself a real haul, as they have a very wide variety of things available. Need a blender? They have brand new ones. How about pots and pans, hand tools, or various small pieces of furniture? They’ll have it. There’s even a washer and dryer available, along with just about everything you can think of from books to lamps, baskets, and artwork. Come on down, scoop up a deal, and help the Skamokawa Grange #425 raise a few bucks for this historic building as well. They sure would love to have you swing by!

FOS MAY TEA. Once again, the Friends of Skamokawa are hosting their special Spring Tea event, which will be coming right up on May 3. The cost is thirty dollars per person. This is the third time that they will be having this event, including a raffle fundraiser. This event is held on the second floor in the River Life Interpretive Center; there is no elevator, however. To make it more fun, you are encouraged to wear your fanciest tea party hat if you have one. Please make reservations ASAP, as there are just a few spots left. They are open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. except this weekend. You can also call the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 360-795-3007 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They hope to see you there.

NEW FLORIST. Someone local has offered their services as a florist, which means you could get a pretty prom corsage or a new, fresh flower arrangement for any special occasion, and it’s close by, which is exciting news. It seems Miss Kylie Kangas is in the business of making those flowers you need. You can check out her work on Instagram (tsg_2km), message her on Facebook (www.facebook.com/kylie.n.moore.1), or call/text at 360-560-4579 to order an arrangement. You may recognize her by her maiden name, as she was Kylie Moore and the daughter of Curt Moore and her mom was Tawnya Paine Munson, her grandma is Kari (Good) Martin, who was a fabulous florist here in Cathlamet years ago, and her grandpa is Wayne Moore. She has a host of other local family members as well. Anyway, I hope all you folks reach out to her for some beautiful flower arrangements and/or your prom corsages and boutonnieres.

NEXT MONTH. Well, I hope you’re ready because this month ends Wednesday, and a lot is going on in May, as usual. One event is the opening of the new gym in Cathlamet next to the Video Store, which will take place on May 1. I hope they will get plenty of memberships from all those who said they wanted to see one open up in this area again. That’s also May Day, so get some flowers from Kylie Kangas and give them to your friends and neighbors. The first weekend in May is when the museum opens, so stop Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and see the exhibits. The Wahkiakum County Master Gardeners will be selling plants up at Erickson Park (581 Columbia Street), where their community garden is, Saturday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also on May 10, the second Saturday of the month, there is the usual Flea Market down here at the Fairgrounds, and there are the usual Bingo games over at the Norse Hall that evening. Then there’s Mother’s Day on May 11 this year, so you’d best not forget to get your mom some flowers or other goodies! Then there’s the 41st annual 4-H Great White Tail Run on May 17, which meets at Skamokawa Vista Park. The run begins at 10 a.m. from Steamboat Slough Road. Call 360-795-3278 for more info. I hope we end April with all of you doing well and gearing up for a busy month ahead.
