Rodney L. Dittmer

Rodney L. Dittmer, of Cathlamet has departed this life peacefully, ready to step into eternity and embrace Jesus, his parents, and his two sisters.

He was born on March 15, 1954, in Vancouver, Washington, and died on April 12, 2025 of a fatal heart attack. He was the son of Lou and Elsie Dittmer and is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Zylstra) Dittmer; his children, Caleb Dittmer, Ryan Dittmer, Hannah (Dittmer) Morrison, and Luke Dittmer; and his grandchildren, Royce Morrison and Stella Dittmer.

Rod felt closest to God when surrounded by nature and music. In his younger years, he enjoyed slot car racing and was raised among chickens, cows, and other animals. He loved "old" cars and refurbished them. His favorite car was the '54 Chevy.

Rod had a special bond with his dog, Linus, who accompanied him on daily walks in nature. His career working with the Evergreen School District Grounds crew was more than a job—it was a calling that kept him connected to the outdoors.

A gifted storyteller, Rod had a knack for making people laugh. He recently earned his ham radio operator’s license, eager to use it as another way to help others. As a Master Gardener, he had knowledge of trees and plants, and appreciation for life’s beauty.

Rod treasured time with his children and grandchildren; he delighted in every moment spent with them. A lover of folk music, he often reminisced about the concerts he attended in the ’70s, playing guitar and writing ballads of his own.

Creatively inclined and hardworking, Rod built the family’s geodesic dome home in White Salmon, Washington, from the ground up—a testament to his skills as an innovative craftsman.

Never without several books to read, his bookcases were full of philosophy, history, mythology and many other literary works. Drawn to water, Rod spent time sailing on the Columbia River, exploring lakes, and navigating the Puget Sound. He loved fishing and was well-versed in birds and waterfowl. Rod made others feel at home in the forest, where he seemed to know every sight and sound by heart.

Rod came to know true meaning in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, having accepted Him as his Savior on Easter, 1982. A Celebration of Rod's life will be held in nearby Vancouver, Wa where he was raised, in May/June. Check private messages for date, time and location.
