Community celebrates World War II veteran Mohning

We had to say goodbye to the last living World War II veteran in our community.. Ronald Wayne Mohning was born on Jan. 12, 1926, in Salton, Minn. He died in Westport, Ore., on March 22 at the age of 99. Ronald lived his life well and with intention.. He was part of the US Navy, and he served during World War II. Ron didn't just stop serving his country once he left the military. He joined the American Legion in Clatskanie, where he was a member for many years.

Ron was an amazing wood worker. He made flag holders for the flags given for veterans at their funeral ceremony by the honor guards to be placed and kept at the legion hall. He also worked at Wanna Mill until he retired.

Ron's memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 22. The ceremony started at the Murry Hill Cemetery with the honoring of Ron and a life well lived. The ceremonial flag was given to his granddaughter. After the graveside service, everyone met at the Clatskanie Cultural Center for food and drinks. Family and friends shared some of Ron's favorite songs and Bible verses, stories from years past, and the service ended with a slideshow of pictures remembering Ron with his family and friends.

Not many people live to the age of 99. Ron was able to experience many things and have a lot of time to spend with his family. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow, so whenever you see a man or woman with a hat, pin, shirt, or anything showing that they have served in the military, take that as an opportunity to thank them for serving our country.
