Emma Dean, a 17-year-old volunteer, organized poppies to be sold through the Louis Larsen Unit 68 Auxiliary before Memorial Day. The poppies are a symbol of peace, sacrifice, and veterans past and present. Poppies are also a symbol of sleep and hope. We had to say goodbye to the last living World War II veteran in our community.. Ronald Wayne Mohning was born on Jan. 12, 1926, in Salton, Minn. He died in Westport, Ore., on March 22 at the age of 99. Ronald lived his life well and with intention.. He was part of the US Navy, and he served during World War II. Lina’s mother gave her to the Quilmes Children's Home when she was 3 and a half years of age because she was poor and did not have a home. Lina lived at the children's home till she was 20. Three weeks ago, Clatskanie resident Crystina Davis opened Crystina's Bread & Blessings. Specializing in cakes, sourdough bread, pretzels, bagels and more, Davis wishes to share her passion for baking with others. Baking only twice a week, Sunday night to Monday morning and Thursday night to Friday morning, Davis can take up to six orders at a time. On Monday, March 10, the American Legion in Clatskanie celebrated its 106th birthday. Local veterans were able to come together to talk, eat, and enjoy the event. Jerry Simmons gave an award from the Department of Oregon to Roger Jolma for being a member of the American Legion for 50 years. Around 45 people attended this birthday celebration.
