Registration is now open for the first Little Island Relay, set for Sunday, Aug. 3. Sponsored by Little Island Creamery, this relay will cover Puget Island roads and include a portion of Birnie Slough. The relay starts at Little Island Creamery with a 5k run to Svensen Park on Puget Island. From there, the cyclists will make an 18-mile route around both Puget and Little Islands, ending at a location at Birnie Slough on Little Island. The 2.5-mile kayak leg leads west on the slough, crossing the channel towards the mainland and ending at Elochoman Slough Marina for a celebration at River Mile 38 Brewery.
The Little Island Relay is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of Puget Island’s vibrant community. Participants will have the chance to meet new people, support local businesses, and contribute to a fun-filled day of team spirit. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or just looking for a new challenge, the event offers a variety of options to get outside and get involved. Puget Island’s stunning natural surroundings will serve as the backdrop for every leg of the relay, making it the perfect opportunity to explore the island’s unique landscapes while getting active.
While the relay is designed as a team race, individuals can also register as an “Island Man” or “Island Woman” participant. Registration for the race is $295 for a full team and $225 for individuals.
Participants in the relay must be 18 years or older, and kayakers must have at least two years of open-water experience. Bicycles must be either a road bike or gravel bike. No electric bikes. Kayaks must be AK1 Sprint or Marathon Kayak 2 with a closed cockpit and bulkheads. Equipment inspections will be held before the race.
Volunteers are also needed to help with all aspects of the relay. This is a great opportunity to support the local community and introduce visitors to this beautiful area of the Lower Columbia River.
Puget Island is the second largest island on the Columbia River. Known for its lush landscapes, rich history, and strong community spirit, Puget Island provides the perfect setting for outdoor sports and events. The Little Island Relay embraces this vibrant atmosphere and highlights the island’s commitment to health, wellness, and environmental preservation.
"We've already received great support for the relay from the community and we hope to make this an annual event to highlight for participants and visitors the beautiful Lower Columbia River region that we live in here in Wahkiakum County," said Little Island Creamery Owner Kathleen McDonald.
