Tigers softball rides 13 game win streak

The Clatskanie Tigers girls softball team faced Knappa three times last week, outscoring them 38-11. The closest contest between the two was during the doubleheader last Tuesday, May 6, when Clatskanie edged Knappa 4-3. The Tigers were led by junior Joey Sizemore, who had two hits, scored two runs, and knocked in two runs as well. Senior Karielle Carlson also had two RBI for the Tigers to go along with a hit, and sophomores Emma Parmley and Olivia George each had a hit and a run scored. Sophomore Adalyn Wemmer added two hits and junior Kyrielle White had a hit as well in the one-run victory.

Tuesday’s other contest would not prove as close, as the Tigers defeated the Loggers 11-1 via the mercy rule in five innings. Sizemore led the team in RBI with three, collecting two hits and adding a run scored. Wemmer also had a well-rounded day at the plate, knocking in two runs over two hits and scoring two runs as well. Junior Kennedy Johnson led the team with three hits to go along with her two runs scored and two RBI, and junior Kayden Byrum had two runs and two hits as well. Sophomore Payton Taylor had a hit and a run scored to go along with two RBI, and White scored two runs and added a hit for the Tigers.

Spreading out 23 runs over five innings, the Tigers completed the three-game season sweep with a 23-7 victory at Knappa last Friday, May 9. Scoring five runs over the first two innings, Clatskanie saw Knappa put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second to bring the score closer. Adding three runs in the third, eight in the fourth, and seven in the fifth, the game was called due to the mercy rule once Knappa’s turn was up in the bottom half of the frame. Sizemore’s six RBI and four hits were both team highs, and the junior scored three runs as well. Parmley led the team with four runs scored to go along with her three hits and three RBI, and George and Taylor combined for five runs, five hits, and seven RBI. Carlson, White, Johnson, and sophomore Peyton Krueger combined for 10 runs, eight hits, and five RBI, and junior Dalilah Baier rounded out the offense with a run scored. The win marked the 13th straight for the Tigers, who haven’t lost since falling to Astoria 8-1 on April 4.

Clatskanie (18-3) looked to keep its 2A/1A-SDI Special District 1 record (9-0) perfect Tuesday at Gaston. The girls return home Friday, May 16, to face Gaston beginning at 3 p.m.
