Andreasen, Tompkins take home season hardware

The Clatskanie High School’s varsity softball team wasn’t the only sporting representative at the school taking home season honors this year. The first-place-finishing Tigers varsity baseball team, led by Coach Ryan Tompkins, had plenty of representatives on the 2A/1A-SD1 first- and second-team all-league roster. Senior Ben Blackwood, and juniors Luke Andreasen, Zach Mollenhour, and Cash Doney all took home first-team, all-league honors for Clatskanie. Senior Brendan Shroll and juniors Finn McDonnell and Bode Shulda received second-team, all-league honors, while senior Carter White received honorable mention. The team itself received special recognition in the form of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, while Tompkins earned Coach of the Year honors and Andreasen took home Player of the Year honors.

The Tigers won for the 16th time in 17 games last Tuesday, May 20, beating Union/Cove 8-1 at home to close out the regular season. Putting up two runs in the first inning, the Tigers added another five in the sixth inning to take a commanding lead. Clatskanie added another run in the seventh and held on for the team’s fifth straight victory. Mollenhour and Shroll led the team in runs scored with two each, and Mollenhour led the team in stolen bases with three. Shroll had two stolen bases as well, followed by one each for Blackwood and Doney. Freshman Will Van Voorst and senior Victor Frank each had a hit and an RBI, while sophomores Mike Simpson and Gunner Engen scored a run each in the win. Along with collecting a hit and scoring a run, Andreasen struck out four Union batters from the mound over five innings pitched.

The Tigers (19-4) began their playoff chase at home Wednesday, May 28, against Portland Christian. The results of the game were not available at the time of press and will be included in next week’s edition of The Wahkiakum County Eagle.
