Finishing its regular season with a 21-4 record, including a perfect 12-0 record in league play, the Clatskanie High School girls softball team has a roster chock full of all-league honorees this year. Coach Teauna Hughes was among the top award recipients, earning 2A/1A Special District 1 Coach of the Year honors. Junior Joey Sizemore, who has batted .616 and has 67 RBI on the season, is only seven shy of tying Abby Doerr’s (Marist Catholic) mark of 74 set in 2019. Sizemore was not only awarded first-team all-league honors, but the junior was named Player of the Year. Having hit 12 home runs, including three grand slams, Sizemore, as a pitcher, has also struck out 152 batters over 93 innings from the mound. Also receiving first-team all-league honors were senior Karielle Carlson, junior Kennedy Johnson, and sophomores Olivia George and Emma Parmley. Receiving second-team all-league honors were junior Kyrielle White and sophomores McKinsey Doyle, Adalyn Wemmer, and Payton Taylor.
Speaking on both her and her team’s accomplishments, Hughes said, “We have had a successful year. These girls are determined and have a lot of fight in them. Yes, the awards are nice and deserved but we are all looking forward to our end goal of playing on June 6.”
The girls’ regular season ended last Wednesday, May 22, with a 16-0 non-league loss to Scio. While Clatskanie has Sizemore, Scio has senior Myleigh Cooper, who has hit a league-record 23 home runs this year to go along with her .813 batting average. Hoping to get back on their winning ways, the Tigers (21-4) took on Powers Wednesday, May 28, to open up postseason play. The results of the game were not available at the time of press but will be included in next week’s edition of The Wahkiakum County Eagle.
