Clatskanie girls lose heartbreaker

Despite a perfect 12-0 league record and an impressive 22-5 record overall in the regular season, the Clatskanie High girls softball team’s postseason run came to an end last Friday, May 30, against North Douglas of Drain. Prior to Friday’s 7-6 loss, the Tigers opened the playoffs last Tuesday, May 27, with an 11-0 mercy-rule victory at home versus Powers. Scoring once in the first and third innings and adding another nine runs in the fourth, the girls were able to hang on for the shutout. The Tigers were led at the plate by sophomore Olivia George, who scored a run, collected two hits, and snagged four RBI.Though not knocking in any runs, junior Joey Sizemore scored three times and collected two hits. Sophomore McKinsey Doyle added to the offense with two hits and two runs scored, and senior Karielle Carlson and sophomore Emma Parmley each scored a run and had a hit for Clatskanie. Rounding out the offense, junior Kennedy Johnson scored once, knocked in a run, and collected a hit, while junior Kyrielle White scored a run in the mercy-rule victory.

On Friday, May 30, the girls fell into a deep hole against North Douglas, giving up six runs over the first three innings and another in the fifth to fall behind 7-1. The Tigers would rally in the fifth with four unanswered runs and another in the sixth, but could not make the comeback complete and ended up falling 7-6 to complete the team’s 2025 season.

In the loss, Sizemore added two more RBI to her season total. The 2A/1A Special District 1 Player of the Year also scored three runs and collected three hits. George, another first-team, all-league underclassmen, had three hits as well, scoring a run and knocking in two. Sophomore Payton Taylor had two RBI and a hit, and sophomore Adalyn Wemmer and Parmley added a run scored and a hit each to round out the offense for the girls.

“We had a tough end to the season,” said Coach Teauna Hughes. “No one wants to lose like that but, in the end, only one team walks away with the trophy. I am so proud of our girls. They fought all season and put up great numbers. We are going to greatly miss our one and only senior while trying to fill her shoes at first base. I have no doubt that we will come back and use the last game as fuel to motivate us and push us even harder next season. We have a great group of girls returning that are willing to do what it takes to reach our end goal.”
