The Wahkiakum County Commissioners convened on Tuesday, June 10, for their regular meeting, where they approved a proclamation declaring June 21 as “Wahkiakum Ferry Day” in honor of the upcoming 100-year celebration of the Wahkiakum Ferry.
Public Works Director Chuck Beyer presented the commissioners with a Certificate of Good Practice from the County Road Administration Board (CRAB). This certificate affirms that the County has met all legal standards and ensures the ongoing distribution of Wahkiakum County’s state gas tax allotments. Beyer introduced the Eden Valley Road Paving Project contract agreement with Lakeside Industries. Eden Valley Road has suffered historic flooding due to several contributing factors, and the paving project aims to elevate the road several inches to help keep it clear during flooding events.
After the contract was presented, public comment was offered by Stephanie Sotka, who questioned whether raising the road was the best solution to address the flooding. “We believe, from years of observation, that the culverts that were put in are not appropriate in size…” said Sotka, who contends that the solution may lie in installing three larger culverts. “I think the paving is going to be a waste of money.” The commissioners eventually agreed to postpone voting on the contract until County Engineer Paul Lacey could be consulted for further discussion. The Public Health fund is currently in the negative as it awaits grant funding from the state. The county commissioners approved a loan to the Public Health fund for $250,000.
