Cathlamet Public Library News

HELLO. We now have 1,547 members at our Library – you're making it happen. Thank you!

AUGUST POP-UPS. Do you like ice cream, popcycles, bubbles, and music? In August, the library will be having fun and light-hearted pop-up events down in front of the library building. With face painting, paper airplanes, bubble play, marshmallow towers, and chalk drawing, each pop-up is a little different. Come and see. Pop-ups are from 2-5 p.m. on Aug. 7, 9, 13, 14, 16, 30.

POKEMON CLUB. Want to join a new Pokémon club? Details are still forming, as far as location, days, and time, but stop by the library to join up.

PEOPLE'S VOICE. Multi-generational tuna fishers Bruce and Wendy, who have a fleet of four tuna boats now docked in Cathlamet, recently signed up for their library cards and were impressed, "For a small library this is an exceptional library," said Wendy. "The library is the heart of a town... it's where you can meet people." Wendy has lived her whole life on a boat and remembers always having boxes of books on the boat and, as a result, she came to value books, reading, and libraries. "If there wasn't a library, it would be a dead town," she said.

FICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is "We Three Queens" by New York Times bestselling author Rhys Bowen. This is book 18 of the 19 book series "Royal Spyness Mystery." The author does a wonderful job of mixing history and humor into this scandalous story that follows fascinating characters involved in a murder mystery in a 1930s Britain which is teetering on war. If you love murder mysteries, check it out.

KID PICK. This week we highlight an interactive, engaging, and creative series of books, the New York Times bestselling series "The Last Kids on Earth" by author Max Brallier. If you like post-apocalyptic stories and zombies, this might be the series for you. As a reader, you feel like you are one of the "last kids" and can take part in creative exercises as you try to survive.

SUMMER READING. Our final summer reading event is Thursday, July 31, from 1-2 p.m. at Erickson Park (581 Columbia St.), so come on out and enjoy. The first 30 minutes are filled with fun activities and, over the next 30 minutes, kids enjoy a read-aloud story time with unique audio sound effects. A big thank you goes out to Jennifer and Collette.

DISCOUNT. During a discussion with Kwan of Patty Cakes Café, the question of how the library and her business might partner to give back to the community came up. Kwan suggested, "Why not just have the customers show their library card for 15 percent off?" Thanks to Kwan and other participating business owners, Cathlamet Library members can now get 15 percent off by showing their library card at these businesses: Patty Cakes, The Spar, The Video Store, Little Woo's, JJ's Pizza, and Naselle Coffee. See each business for more details. Interested in teaming-up with the library and being a part of the 15 percent off group? Call the library at 360-795-3254.

LIBRARY CARDS. Cathlamet library cards are free for all Wahkiakum residents. The Cathlamet Public Library is located at 115 Columbia St. and is open Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
