Cathlamet Public Library News

HELLO. We are narrowing in on 1,600 library members, so thank you one and all. With a county of roughly 4,800 residents, that’s approximately 33 percent who have a library card. Though this is wonderful, we keep moving forward, engaging with you through local events as we reach out to all residents. Our next step is to attain 50 percent membership here in Wahkiakum. Let’s make Wahkiakum “library strong!”

COUNTY FAIR. The library has a booth near the front gate entrance at the 117th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair. Please stop by to get a library card, ask any library questions you need answered, enjoy an Otter Pop, or just chat. We’d enjoy seeing you. The Wahkiakum County Fair is at Skamokawa Fairgrounds Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 21 – 23. Reminder, the library is closed during these fair dates.

FICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is “Redemption” by New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci. This is the fifth book of the “Memory Man” detective series. Kirkus Reviews on Memory Man stated about the book, “Perennial bestseller Baldacci unveils an offbeat hero with an unusual skill set and tragic past who takes on the evil mastermind behind a devastating school shooting. Decker proves a quirky, original antihero with a definite method to his madness. Readers will want to see Decker back on the printed page again and again.” Winnipeg Free Press stated, “The plot never slows enough to take a breath.”

YOUNG ADULT PICK. This week we highlight the book “I’ll Give You the Sun” by Jandy Nelson, which has been recognized as one of Time Magazine’s 100 best young adult books of all time. Regarding the book, BCCB stated, “Nelson’s prose is replete with moments of stunning emotional clarity, and her characters are as irresistible to the reader as they are to each other. No matter how they hurt each other, the love among all the characters is huge here; huge enough to destroy, huge enough to forgive, and huge enough to put their broken world back together again.” Publishers Weekly stated of the book, “Readers are meant to feel big things, and they will. Nelson’s novel brims with emotion, grief, longing, and love in particular as Noah, Jude, and the broken individuals in their lives find ways to heal.”

GAMING GROUPS. We have two popular gaming groups who have started back up after a summer break. One group, Teen Dungeons & Dragons (6 – 12th grade), meets in the Community room below the library. The Siblings & Family Gaming group meets in the Pioneer Community Center behind the library. Both groups meet on the first through fourth Wednesdays from 6 – 8 p.m. No meetings on fifth Wednesdays, holidays, or local school closures. If interested, please stop by the library or on a game night to find out more.

WORK SPECIALIST. Diana Zimmerman from Employ Wahkiakum is at the Cathlamet Library every Thursday (excluding Aug. 21) from 3-5 p.m. to help job seekers with job searches, resumes, cover letters, and more. Please come on in. She’s there for you.
