Tsuga Gallery announces Elizabeth Nugent Rose as its artist of the month for September. The fifth of eight children, Elizabeth was born and raised in Virginia, where she spent her childhood exploring Chesapeake Bay. The Bay provided a vibrant abundance of wildlife that she explored with her grandfather. Elizabeth's grandmother got her started with crafting at an early age. These early family moments sparked her lifelong passion for fiber arts, as both her mother and grandmother taught her how to knit and crochet. Elizabeth carried her love of fiber arts with her when she moved to the northwest at the age of 25 to pursue a career in teaching.
Elizabeth graduated from the Waldorf Therapeutic Early Childhood Education Program and spent 25 years as a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. It was during this time she discovered the art of felting and puppetry and soon combined these two crafts. She would "felt" the puppets she used to bring seasonal stories to life for her students. Elizabeth was promoted to Head of School, and she continued to enhance her felting skills. Soon, she began to teach adult classes, passing on her expertise. After retiring, she moved to Puget Island and founded Island Felting in 2019. Elizabeth finds inspiration in the rhythms of the year, nature, and the life around her, weaving these influences into each piece she creates. Elizabeth has two grown children, one grandchild, and resides here in Cathlamet with her husband, Peter. Stop by Tsuga gallery to check out Elizabeth's creative felted pieces. The Gallery is located at 70 Main St. in Cathlamet and is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
