DAMP BEGINNING. Well, as this week begins, I know that many of you aren't too keen about the dampness falling from the sky but there are a whole lot of folks who are relishing in the cool down and the "sprinklers" from the sky. Our yards are pretty parched and our forests are tinder dry, besides, it's September and aren't we supposed to see a shift away from the hot days of summer?

PIE AND ICE CREAM. Just a reminder: don't forget, this Saturday, Sept. 13, there will be an Ice Cream Social with pie, music and a presentation at the Julia Butler Hansen House in Cathlamet, located at 35 Butler Street. This event takes place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. tickets are fifteen dollars online or twenty at the door.
GOOD CAUSE. On Sept. 19, the Spar restaurant is donating fifteen percent of their sales to the St. James Family Center (SJFC), so if you'd like to skip the cooking and enjoy a great meal and help out a worthy cause, then please head that way. The SJFC is crucial to our community so if you can help support them that would be great. The family center is located up the hill in Cathlamet at 1134 Columbia St., you can always stop by and make a direct donation to them too.
LAST SATURDAY. Don't forget to support the Pioneer Community Associations' fundraiser, "Silent Auction with a Twist" for the Pioneer Center. The event is being held at the Norse Hall on Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are just fifteen dollars and include a complementary glass of wine or beer. I hope you've been able to put together something to donate for this event as the more things they have to auction, the more money is raised.
PLEASE DONATE. The Friends of Skamokawa will be hosting their fundraiser next month, Oct. 18, so if you'd like to donate something to that Wine Tasting and Auction, please let them know. 360-795-3007 or stop by the hall Saturday or Sunday 12-4 p.m.
MUSEUM. The Wahkiakum Historical Society members invite you to stop by your local museum in Cathlamet at 65 River Street on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. to check out all the beautiful items and pictures collected by the museum over the years. The museum will be closing for the winter at the end of October, so you've only got another seven weekends to check it all out.
COMMUNITY BREAKFAST. The free Community Breakfast is still taking place on Thursdays at the Skamokawa Grange Hall at 18 Fairgrounds Road, so feel free to stop by from 10 a.m. to noon and enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat with your friends and neighbors. Time is ticking away and it won't be long until Christmas will be here so the Shoeboxes of Joy is hoping you'll be able to donate some shoeboxes and "goodies" to deliver to folks during the holidays, so if possible, you can drop those things off on Thursdays as well.
REMEMBERING. Since this newspaper comes out on Thursday for most of us, I know that we'll all be hearing and seeing all of the horrific events that unfolded on that terrible day, September 11 back in 2001, when terrorists struck our nation. It is hard to believe that it has been 24 years as I think all of us can remember clearly where we were on that fateful day... it was truly devastating. So, we want to honor the memories of all those that were lost on that day including the brave men and women who rushed in to help, only to perish as well. Having been to the memorial site, I can say that it is really a sobering reminder of what happened that day and just how fast our lives can be changed forever when we least expect it. May we never forget!
