Long time Wahkiakum resident, Veryle M. West, born in Canby, OR on March 13, 1929 went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones at her home in Cathlamet, WA.
She is survived by her sons, David West (Kathi) and Alan West, her daughter Annette Lundy (Paul), her sisters Irma Sillonis and Elizabeth Roley, her brother LuRoy Douglas and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father Luther Douglas, her mother, Junia Douglas, her husband, Charlie West, her sons, Steven West and Daniel West, her brothers Gerald Douglas, David Douglas, Melvin Douglas and Orville Douglas, her sister Clarice Roley, and her great grandson Chase West.
Veryle lived a fulfilled life. She was a true follower of Jesus and was an inspiration and example of how a Lady of the Lord should live. She was a Sunday School teacher most of her life and was an active member of the women's ministry as well. She was also a prayer warrior and many family members, friends and loved ones would call her to ask her to pray.
Her and her husband lived in their home in Cathlamet from the early 50's to the early 70's before moving to Kennewick, WA. Veryle went back to school when her grandchildren were small and became an elementary teacher. She taught at a private Christian school in Pasco, WA for ten years and then substitute taught at public schools for many years after she retired. She lived in Kennewick for several years after her husband had passed and then she moved back to their home in Cathlamet in 2000. She also taught as a substitute teacher in Cathlamet for a few years after she moved back. Veryle lived the rest of her wonderful years in her home in Cathlamet.
When summertime came, you would find Veryle in Alaska commercial fishing with her son, Alan, and his family. She started going up in the early 1980's and continued to go until she was 90 years of age. She loved fishing in Alaska and made many long-lasting connections with the other fisher folk.
After she retired from teaching, Veryle helped her daughter, Anne, and son-in-law, Paul, during the early fall with their commercial grape harvesting on their vineyard of many acres. The harvested grapes were sold for the production of grape jam and jelly. She did this for numerous years and always looked forward to grape season.
She loved to travel and her son, David, chauffeured and accompanied, her many weekend or week-long road trips to visit her out of state siblings and other mini-vacation destinations over the last 15 years. Numerous times she travelled by plane with a family member to go visit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that lived across the U.S. She also was able to fulfill a lifetime dream with her sister, Elizabeth, and visit the Holy Lands.
Many also remember the hot soup and hot chocolate that she would make during the winter snow when we would use the sled run up behind her house. Her house was cozy and warm after a cold fun-filled day or evening.
Her celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025,
at 11 a.m. at the River of Life Assembly of God, 45 Main St, in Cathlamet, WA with a potluck reception to follow.
