Sheriff's Corner

Hello from your Sheriff! October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This month, you may see people wearing purple ribbons and/or clothing as a sign of unity to recognize and empower the survivors of Domestic Violence and support the advocates who inspire courage to make a difference and break the cycle of abuse.

Domestic Violence affects many families and is frequently underreported nationwide due to fear and societal stigma. Domestic Violence survivors often need support to seek help and end the cycle of abuse. If you are experiencing or know someone experiencing domestic violence, please reach out. Let’s continue to be a shining example of a community that takes care of one another and is an advocate for each other. Remember, “If you see something, say something”, and wear your purple!

I encourage you all to visit thehotline.org and stjamesfamilycenter.org for national and local resources on domestic violence, as well as education. If you have further questions or need resources, please call our local Charlotte House Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services 24-hour hotline at 360-795-6400 and toll-free 866-795-9381. Our local Charlotte House advocates have done amazing work over the years, and I have personally witnessed them helping many survivors transform their lives for the better. Please call 911 if you have an emergency or suspect someone else is experiencing one.

The Sheriff’s Office's busy season is winding down with the end of summer; however, Halloween and the start of the holiday season are right around the corner. This year, Halloween falls on a Friday, which means there are more opportunities to enjoy community events and spend time with friends in costume throughout the evening. With that in mind, please remember to have a safety plan when trick-or-treating, keep an eye out for little “ghouls” and “goblins” crossing the streets, and always be sure to have a designated driver for attending those spooky costume parties! Please visit nhtsa.gov/halloween-safety-tips for quick Halloween Safety Tips provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Stay safe, Wahkiakum County!
