COOLED OFF. As we begin this week, which marks the end of September, we can expect some cooler weather accompanied by moisture to start off October. Although it’s much needed, I won’t complain. With multiple fires raging in Washington and Oregon, and lakes looking like ponds, we truly need some rainfall. However, I hope it doesn’t come down in torrents of rain, causing flooding and damage. A nice, steady rain would be ideal. Fingers crossed. However, the weekend forecast is looking much drier, so for those trying to enjoy those Fall camping trips, this might work out just perfectly.

GREAT ARTICLE. I certainly enjoyed last week’s article on the front page featuring a wonderful, sweet woman, business owner, and Skamokawa resident, Carla Keilwitz… terrific! With Christmas coming soon, please consider heading up to Carla’s shop at the mini mart, located along SR 4 on the eastern end of Cathlamet. As the article said, there have been many changes in recent years and so video rentals are not nearly as common as they used to be. Still, she has diversified and added some antique items to her store, so if you thought it was just a video store, you might want to stop by and check it out, perhaps purchasing some wonderful collectibles for yourself or to give as a gift. Remember, shop local!

MUSEUM OPEN. In case you didn’t know, our county museum is still open on weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. through the end of this month, and then it will close for the winter. There have been some great folks coming through the museum from all over the place, and even some first-time visitors who are newer to the area, and everyone loves it. In case you didn’t know, it’s located on the back street of Cathlamet, River Street, just to the right of the PUD (65 River Street). There’s a great big train to the right of the building, so you can’t miss it. So, please stop by and check out the photographs and explore all the displays, which are made up of donated items with a connection to Wahkiakum County. If you’re looking for family history, Kari Kandoll has done a great job of compiling things, but as always, if you have something to add to your family history and want it included in the museum, feel free to stop by and add your history to the mix of others. One can only do so much, so your research and your contributions to the historical records are appreciated.

LOOKING FOR PHOTOS. Speaking of history, Joel McEntire is conducting his own research about his property. He would greatly appreciate the opportunity to add a photograph of George and Margaret Hollar to his collection, as it appears the Hollars were the original landowners of the area where he now lives. Do any of the many relatives of the Hollar/Irving family have any good photos of these two that Joel could obtain for his records? If you know Joel, please get in touch with him directly. Alternatively, you can reach me, or you can call the museum curator, Kari Kandoll, at 360-849-4353. Also, if you happen to know his Aunt Judy Marsyla, who occasionally brags about him on Facebook, you can let her know that you have one. Anyway, here’s hoping our wonderful residents will come through once again so we can further enrich Joel’s knowledge of his property.

UPCOMING/REMINDERS. If you are reading this on Oct. 2, then it’s just sixteen days until the Friends of Skamokawa will be holding their annual fundraiser, which will be held in Cathlamet this year at the Rat Tap Bar down on Broadway Street. So, get your tickets now and they hope to see you on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Also, Shop with a Cop will take place at the Duck Inn on November 1st. Your donations and participation in this annual event are truly appreciated. We appreciate Logan Britt for hosting this event and we appreciate our officers for coming together and making these kids’ wishes come true! This truly is a win-win for all of us. It’s a great time, it’s for a good cause, and we as a community are showing those youngsters how coming together benefits all of us.
