Clatskanie win streak reaches nine

The Clatskanie girls volleyball team improved to 12-1 over the weekend with a three-set sweep of Nestucca (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) Saturday. Since falling to Delphian on Sept. 4, the Tigers have won nine straight games, sweeping all of their opponents in the process. In Saturday's win over Nestucca, junior Lacey Willis had 17 kills to lead the team. Willis also had seven digs and two aces, while senior Joey Sizemore managed 11 kills, three aces, and seven digs. Junior Olivia George had five kills and two digs for the Tigers, while junior McKinsey Doyle led the team with 12 digs, contributing two saves as well.

"We struggled with serve receive and serving errors today, but made up for it on defense," said Coach Amanda Baker following Saturday's victory.

Last Thursday, Clatskanie defeated Columbia Christian on the road in three straight sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-14). Sizemore led the team with 17 kills and a .538 hitting average. "She was also our defensive standout with eight digs, a save and two aces," Baker said of Sizemore. Willis had 12 kills, seven digs, and two aces in the win, while George contributed with four kills of her own. According to Baker, sophomore Izzy Mustola was "huge" for the Tigers from the serving line with five aces.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Tigers defeated Knappa at home in three straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-11). Willis led the team with 14 kills and a .440 hitting average and had what Baker described as "two amazing saves" in the win. Junior Addy Compton led the team with 31 assists and five aces, while Sizemore had eight kills and six aces. Rounding out the team's standout stats were George, junior Peyton Krueger, senior Mya Jensen, who had five kills each in the victory.

Clatskanie (12-1) traveled to Portland Christian Tuesday, Sept. 30, but the results were not available at the time of press. The team returns home Thursday, Oct. 2 to take on Vernonia at 6:30 p.m. inside the Clatskanie gym. The team will then travel to Aloha next Tuesday, Oct. 7 to take on Faith Bible Christian before traveling to Gaston Thursday, Oct. 9.
