To The Eagle,
In the Oct. 9 edition of the Eagle, an advertisement was published purporting to be a “Proclamation to the World” that the “Tchinook People” are holding a “Constitutional Convention to write a National Constitution of the Tchinook People” to be held at Rosburg March 20, 2026.
Eagle readers and the public should be aware that the sponsor of this advertisement is not an enrolled member of the Chinook Indian Nation. Moreover, the Chinook Indian Nation has an existing tribal constitution of long standing. Thus, the premises of the advertisement are false.
This notice placed by one disaffected individual should not in any way be understood to represent an official communication of the Chinook Indian Nation. Official communications of the Chinook Indian Nation are issued only by the Tribal Office in Bay Center. Information is available on the Chinook Indian Nation website at chinooknation.org. Any questions can be directed to the Chinook Indian Nation office email at Office@chinooknation.org or by telephone at 360-875-6670.
It is unfortunate that one disgruntled individual has taken out advertising to promote such an illegitimate event, particularly when the Chinook Indian Nation and its elected Tribal Council are otherwise rightfully concerned with restoring federal recognition, wrongfully revoked in 2001 (see chinookjustice.org/).
I hope that this spurious “constitutional convention” is ignored by citizens concerned with the future destiny and distinguished past of the Chinook Indian Nation. Please continue to support the legitimate aspirations of the Chinook Indian Nation in its long struggle for justice and federal recognition.
David Olson,
Mayor of Cathlamet
