Clatskanie girls on five-game win streak

Prior to the new year, the Clatskanie High School varsity girls basketball team began what has become a five-game win streak by thumping Catlin Gabel 41-24 and outlasting Warrenton 39-34 the next day. So far, in 2026, the Tigers are 3-0, starting with a 32-31 nail biter against Columbia Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Trailing 18-15 entering halftime and 27-24 going into the fourth quarter, Clatskanie outscored Columbia Christian 8-4 in the final frame to eke out the one-point victory. Playing short handed once again, the Tigers were led in scoring by senior Joey Sizemore, who had 16 points and, alongside junior Lacey Willis, co-led the team in blocks with two. Willis also led the team in steals with six and assists with three to go along with her four points scored. Junior Olivia George had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down a team-high 16 rebounds. “The girls started off sluggish and couldn’t quite find their rhythm, but they dug deep when it mattered most,” said Coach Dawn Warren. “Joey’s clutch free throws in the final seconds put us ahead by one, sealing a gritty win.”

The girls would stretch the win streak to four on Friday, Jan. 9, with a 65-57 road victory over Portland Christian. Outscoring the Royals in three of the four quarters, the Tigers were led in scoring, once again, by Sizemore, who had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Sizemore led the team in assists with eight, steals with three, and blocks with two. George, leading the team in rebounds with 14, had yet another double-double with her 20 points scored. Willis also had double-digit scoring with 10 points, while senior Bethany Hagen scored six points and hauled in three rebounds. “We prepared for this matchup knowing that, while they don’t have much size, they are quick and dangerous from the three-point line,” said Warren. “We adjusted our defense accordingly, and our girls did a great job making the necessary changes. Joey Sizemore and Olivia George dominated both on the perimeter and in the paint. After the game against Columbia Christian, it was great to see the team come out and play the kind of basketball we all know they’re capable of.”

The win streak would reach five Monday, Jan. 12, with a decisive 50-26 home victory over Vernonia. Outscoring the Loggers in all four quarters, the Tigers were led by Sizemore’s 21 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists, six steals, and single block. The senior just missed a rare triple-double by one assist and an extremely rare quadruple double by four steals and an assist. George scored 17 points, pulled down five rebounds, grabbed three steals, and dished out two assists in the victory. The Tigers took on Nestucca on Wednesday, Jan. 14, but the results of the game were not available at the time of press. The team travels to Aloha Friday, Jan. 16, to take on Faith Bible Christian before returning home to take on Gaston Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. inside the Clatskanie High School gym.
