The Eagle is proud to partner with the WCSO to bring you this monthly message from your local Sheriff.

Hello from your Sheriff! I’d like to refresh everyone on some traffic laws pertaining to dirt bikes and UTVs, commonly referred to as “side-by-sides.” Side-by-sides/UTVs are allowed on non-highway public roads with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or lower. Side-by-sides/UTVs may cross public roads exceeding 35 miles per hour to a maximum of 60 miles per hour at ninety-degree intersections for the purpose of continuing on a 35 miles per hour or less public roadway. Side-by-sides/UTVs need to meet the equipment and safety requirements, such as lights, mirrors, and properly displayed registration as defined in RCWs 46.09.442 and 46.09.457. A valid Driver’s License is required to operate side-by-sides/UTVs on public roadways.

Dirt-bikes or off-road motorcycles are allowed on public roads, streets, and highways only if they are properly fitted with the safety equipment and registration outlined in RCW 46.61.705. Additionally, a valid Driver’s License with a motorcycle endorsement is required. Please remember that helmets are also required with specific exceptions listed in RCW 46.37.530.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. There is a brief breakdown on what human trafficking is, with tips for prevention and intervention on the U.S. Department of State website at state.gov/national-human-trafficking-prevention-month. Incidents involving human trafficking can be complex, with many subtle clues to look out for when identifying potential victims and perpetrators. There is a wealth of information and training opportunities online to better understand how to spot human trafficking as citizens, but just remember, as in all things, that if something seems strange, out of place, or inappropriate, don’t be afraid to say something.

Stay safe, Wahkiakum County!
