Eager crab and oyster eaters packed the barn at Columbia River Ranch Retreats on Saturday, Feb. 7, for the 40th Annual Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce "Crabby in Cathlamet" Crab and Oyster Feed. Along with being a significant fundraiser for Bald Eagle Days, the sold-out event was an opportunity for friends near and far to gather.
Aside from the crab and all-you-can-eat oysters, attendees were able to make purchases of drinks, desserts, and raffle tickets. Up for raffle was a mix of donated items, baskets, experiences and more from local and regional businesses. All funds raised from these efforts directly support the fireworks show at Bald Eagle Days.
Crews of volunteer servers piled plates high with crab, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, and rolls. Meanwhile, students from Wahkiakum High School FFA (Future Farmers of America) program were on hand to deliver oysters to tables by the bucket load.
"This is always a great event," said Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors President Steve Cardon. "What a way to showcase our community to everyone attending, showcase our great local businesses, and so many things made here in Wahkiakum."
"People begin calling our office in September asking about this event, so I'm very happy that everything tonight worked out well and people really seemed to enjoy it," said Chamber of Commerce Community Development Coordinator Garrett Radcliffe. "We certainly could not have put this on without the help of so many local businesses who donated prizes, served up the food and drinks, or our awesome Mule students who delivered oysters seemingly all night without stopping."
The Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank everyone who helped make the night a great one. The amazing group of volunteers who served the sides, managed the kitchen, and assisted parking were nothing short of extraordinary. Particular thanks to Kyle Hurley and Billy Peek for their work in cooking the oysters and coordinating the students. Thank you to all of the businesses and individuals who donated raffle items, we were able to raise thousands in support of Bald Eagle Days.
