  • Wooden boat festival is next weekend

PERFECT--The weather for Bald Eagle Day just couldn't have been more perfect. As this week begins, we've got some heat arriving but at least Sunday morning began with some heavy, moist cloud cover to help dampen things a bit before it got sunny and warm. With a dry, very hot week ahead, here's to keeping hydrated and limiting our time in the sun so nobody is having to be carted away due to heat stroke. BURN BAN--Don't forget, our county is now under a burn ban, which actually started July 15, so nobody should be lighting any fires anywhere, for...

  • Bald Eagle Days will be here this weekend

WARM ENOUGH?--This past weekend was plenty toasty for many of us, although I heard that right along the coastline, it was much cooler, which is probably why I saw a ton of traffic headed that way! When we are in the upper 80s and low 90s, it's way too warm for my liking but I know the heat lovers were thoroughly enjoying it. As we start this work week, we have cloud cover, which suits me just fine and I heard that temperatures that had been expected to be real hot, have now been forecasted for much cooler, so we'll see how it turns out, as by...

  • Challenge of Champions event Friday, July 20

SURPRISE--As this past weekend began, we had a bit of a surprise, as we woke up to wetness on Saturday morning and had some off and on misty times throughout the morning. While I appreciated the unexpected watering, it was not appreciated by those who had either just baled hay or just taken down a field, thinking they had no rain in the forecast; bummer! However, Sunday morning came around and it was blue skies and temps in the upper 70s, with a good breeze, so it was a great way to end the weekend. Monday started with some great cloud cover,...

  • Bald Eagle Days are approaching quickly

WEEKEND--This past weekend wasn't the best one we've had, but it wasn't too bad either. We saw a few, very light sprinkles on Saturday morning but for the most part, it was dry and kind of humid, so one could still get out there and work in the yard or tackle other outdoor duties. If you were lucky, you just got to enjoy the day and had a play day instead of a work day! Sunday saw some misty moments as well, but its showers were brief and it wasn't too bad. While I woke up to wetness on Monday morning, they say we're heating up this week, so I...

  • Use extreme caution with fireworks this year

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 28, 2018

NICE WEEKEND--While we ended last Friday with a few sprinkles here in West Valley, it wasn't much, and the clouds on Saturday morning cleared off and gave a perfect day for the Kite Festival at Vista Park. It also made shopping at the Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale a lot nicer as well. Things warmed up a little more on Sunday but with a nice breeze here, it was just about perfect. However, by nightfall, we saw some big raindrops start to fall, and then some bright, flashing lightning cross the sky and after that, some of the loudest, house...

  • Today is the first day of summer

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 21, 2018

SUMMER HAS BEGUN--The hot weather showed up just in time to welcome Summer, although if it gets as hot as they say it might, I won't be overly thrilled, as anything over 75 seems a bit too much for me. But the way forecasts keep changing, who knows, it may be back to "Spring-like" weather by the time you read this, and that would suit me just fine. With fire danger already at high levels, more dry conditions must be met with extreme caution in all things outdoors which could involve a heat source. It may be legal to burn, or BBQ, but common...

  • WHS graduation to be held Friday, June 15

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 14, 2018

MUCH WETTER--Compared to the week before, this past weekend was much wetter. In spite of some sunny times, the rainy times definitely made their presence known, as it would absolutely come down in buckets, which pretty much destroyed what flowers I had left out there. Oh well, I got to enjoy them longer than usual, as it often pours just before Memorial Day. With our parched lawns, fields and forests, it was actually a good thing to have them watered down a bit. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 14-20 are Mike McLaughlin,...

  • Final car show was a great success

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 7, 2018

HALF TERRIFIC--This past weekend we got one perfect day, and one "so-so" day. With some of our states experiencing wildfires already, I have to say, the raindrops that started on Sunday afternoon, were really a blessing I thought, as were the ones that fell on Monday, as we've had an extremely dry May, which is pretty rare for us, and so things are already quite dry. WRAPPING IT UP.--The "perfect day" was this last Saturday, which was the day of the last Wahkiakum Dollars For Scholars Rods and Reels Rod Run (car show) so for that, we were...

  • Final car show will be Saturday at fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|May 31, 2018

WEEKEND WAS NICE--The traffic was a bit heavy on Friday, but it sure was a nice day to start out this past Memorial Day weekend. Saturday saw some more clouds move in, but no rain, so it was perfect for doing some yard work, and Sunday was gorgeous. By Monday, which was Memorial Day, we had some more clouds but still a wonderful day. Considering parts of Maryland got hammered with massive rains and flash flooding and tropical storm Alberto was causing some havoc down south, I'd say we've been quite fortunate. I can only hope our upcoming...

NICE START--This week began with some nice weather and I think the sunny and breezy conditions are just great, as it's not too hot out there while we catch up on those yard chores. While my rhodies are all popping out, the grass popped up as well, so it was definitely time to crank up the lawn mower and get that weedeater going, as nothing grows faster with some earlier sprinkles and then some sunshine than the lawn and weeds! Here's hoping the holiday weekend brings us some sunshine as well. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May...

  • Great White Tail Run Saturday at JBH Refuge

    Kay Chamberlain|May 17, 2018

HALF OVER--Here we are, half past the middle of May so I guess you know, we should be experiencing a lot of May flowers due to April showers, and even May showers, so I hope you're enjoying the blooms and not commiserating with some of us, who really can't handle all this pollen! It's also a time where keeping our cars from being covered in that light to heavy, green haze is a real challenge! Have you been enjoying the sunshine? I hope all of the animals you own have been too, but sadly, just about every day there are multiple reports of animal...

  • Celebrate Mother's Day this Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|May 10, 2018

WEATHER--It was pretty nice at the beginning of last week, and then we cooled down a bit, with even a few showers falling here and there, but I was still able to get some flower bed work done, so I hope you got to enjoy the sunny times. This past weekend, we had a warmish Saturday but high clouds and sprinkles started in West Valley by late afternoon, so it wasn't as sunny and nice as some folks were experiencing. Sunday saw us taking turns between sunshine and clouds and quite a cool breeze, while just a few miles down the road, it was sunny...

  • Museum opens Saturday 1-4 p.m., for the season

    Kay Chamberlain|May 3, 2018

WET START--As this week begins, it is taking turns being wet and being sunny. It's hard to do a lot of outside things with the "yo-yo" weather, but it beats the steady downpours we'd been having earlier this month. If forecasters are correct, we should be seeing a stretch of dry days this week, like last week, so here's hoping that nice weather prediction comes true. Last week we got up in the 80s, which is unbelievable for April, so we didn't have a lot of time to adjust from the 40's to the 80's and back down again! Unfortunately, on those...

  • Sunday is last day for exhibit at Redmen Hall

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 26, 2018

WEEKEND--This past weekened we started out a little damp on Saturday morning after a pretty cloudy, yet dry Friday, but it quickly became real sunny and nice. Saturday night saw temps drop down in the mid-30s, and with clear skies, I was hoping to see the meteor shower but after about 15 minutes of standing outside in the cold, I gave up and my aching neck and I went to bed. Did you see the meteor shower? Sunday began gorgeous and it looks like the whole week will be that way, so here's to enjoying getting our webbed feet dried out at long...

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 19, 2018

ENOUGH ALREADY--I think I can safely say that we have all had our fill of April showers, so let's hope that the forecast of a couple of dry days this week came true, so we could dry out a little bit before the next wet system comes in. Better yet, let's hope that system doesn't come in at all, as we've had enough of the wet stuff, thank you very much! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 19-25 are Fred Bennett Jr., Linda Mahitka, Jeri Terpsma Pierce, Nancy Granger, Nathan Kindcaid, Max Schmitz, Alyssa Braman, Marie Allen, Susan...

  • New exhibit at Redmen Hall opens Friday

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 12, 2018

SOGGY & BREEZY--At the end of last Saturday, we were sitting here looking at two inches of rain on our weather meter, so it was definitely a wet one. While some areas got hit with some strong winds, we here in West Valley had some gusts but nothing as bad as what we first feared, or close to other storms. We woke up to a very wet Sunday, and actually, a little more wind than we thought we'd have. Plus, after looking at the rain gauge, it was a bit shocking to see that we'd already had two inches of rain by noon, so while we thought Saturday...

SOME GOOD/SOME BAD--Thank goodness we had a nice day on Saturday after some morning clouds, as it made the Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt a big hit, and all the doings at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds were much more enjoyable as well. With my weather app saying snow was due, I was a bit shocked, but by golly, many areas wound up with white on Monday morning; yikes! Let's hope that's the end of the winter weather. For now, it sounds like we are going to have a pretty soggy week ahead. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 5-11 are...

BRR--This past weekend saw some nippy temperatures, and even some snow in higher elevations, so it looks like Winter is not quite ready to give up to Spring! With a few dry days scheduled for this week, I'm hoping that they materialize, as it will make all the upcoming Easter egg hunts and celebrations much more enjoyable. Here's to sunshine; bring it on! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 29-April 4 are Aaliyah Montgomery, Leif Carroll, Mike Carroll, Linda McClain, Dana McClain, Vaal Gribskov, Paul Vik, Pam Emery, Gordon...

  • Open mic night at Grange Hall Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 22, 2018

NOT SO GREAT--I suppose it depended on where you were, but as this week began, Sunday was definitely on the wet side in West Valley. We did have our dry moments, but for the most part, it was damp. Saturday was a bit better with more sun than rain, so I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the dryness on that day at least. However, the work week began dry after some very thick fog, which kept the ships' horns blowing all night long. Unfortunately the forecast for this week shows more rain than sun, and some very cold temperatues in the...

  • Happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 15, 2018

GORGEOUS--In spite of some cold nights, the sunshine that shone through my windows on Saturday and Sunday was certainly welcomed! It was even into the 60s, which was a far cry from those cold, wet, windy and nippy 30 and 40 degree temperatures we've been having lately. I hope you got to enjoy the sunshine while it was here, as we all know that after a few of those, the rains return. Hopefully the sunshine will return, as we already mowed the lawn, and we know what happens once you do that, you'll be remowing it after every rain storm, as it...

  • Vintage & Antique Sale on Friday and Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 8, 2018

NOT BAD--After a chilly start, our last weekend didn't start out too bad, as that blue sky and sunshine was truly a welcome sight. We even got up into the 50's! Of course, we couldn't have two perfect days in a row, but at least part of Sunday was decent after another frosty start. Here's hoping we have more sun than rain this week, as my ole bones could sure use a warm up! WINNERS--Another great thing happened Saturday morning, as our Lady Mules fought back real hard and after a neck and neck, hair raising, blood pressure raising game, wound...

WEEKEND ENDS--We certainly had a couple of batches of heavy snow around West Valley this past week, but at least when I woke up Saturday morning, the sun was shining and temperatures were above freezing and that certainly was a huge improvement over the 19 degrees we'd had the day before that! I have to say, I was pretty happy to see temps in the forties and "just rain" on Sunday morning as that really helped turn things green once again, instead of solid white!! Of course, I did start to worry a bit when late that evening, we saw a snow begin...

  • Winter not over, with low temperatures and snow

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 22, 2018

SNOW RETURNED--We woke up to a light layer of snow in West Valley this past Sunday morning, but places just a bit higher in elevation saw several inches of snow come down. KM had several inches and the Beaver Creek area saw a good amount too, which was ideal for sledding and snowboarding, so it just depended on where you were as to how much you got. We woke up Monday morning to temperatures in the low 20s, so yep, it was nippy. While we had become accustomed to a "mild winter," this just goes to show us that winter is not yet over and I've even...

  • Chamber Crab & Oyster feed at Norse Hall on Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 15, 2018

NICE--We started last weekend with some very chilly temperatures, below freezing on Saturday and Sunday morning, but the sunshine that followed was nice to see in place of the cloudy, often drizzly day we had on Friday, at least out our way! This work week has begun with temperatures in the freezing zone as well, 24 degrees at our house, so I guess that's the trade off we have going in order to get that sunshine! With temps only reaching up into the 40s, I'd say the "heating element" has gone out in the sun! ROAD WORK--By now you have probably...

  • Happy Valentine's Day to everyone, near and far

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 8, 2018

WET BEGINNING--If fog and drizzle are your friends, then you really liked how this week began, as Sunday was a gloomy, foggy, drizzly kind of day, which was just right for those who needed an excuse to sit inside all day in their sweats and watch football. Then came Monday morning with more heavy, wet fog, but by noon, we actually had the skies clear up some; yeah! By the time you read this, we should have had a few drier days and warmer temperatures, so I hope this came true, as my feet are getting a bit "webbed" I think. Of course, with...
