NICE BEGINNING--As the week begins, our Sunday morning was nothing but socked in fog for quite some time, but by lunch time, we had some nice sunshine, so that was quite enjoyable. I understand many parts of the area had sunshine on Saturday as well, but out here in West Valley, we didn't see any of it as it was gray and gloomy all day, so those who were elsewhere were quite lucky. After a brief rainy period, forecasters say we'll be in for more dry weather as the first month of this new year comes to an end. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating bir...
NOT BAD--As this work week began, at least for some folks, it wasn't too bad, as the morning showers gave way to sunshine and my "lake" started to shrink after a weekend of heavy rains and nastiness at times. Several days of this week look to be dry, albeit with some heavy fog in the morning hours, so be sure to get those lights on and slow down a bit. I'll enjoy the dry days, but for those who are wishing to use that new ski gear or snowboards that they got for Christmas, I am sure that they are wishing that it would cool down and snow. I'm...
ANOTHER WEEK--By the looks of it, this year is going to fly by like the last one. We have spent this past week in a virtual fog as both evenings and mornings were thick with the stuff, at least down this way. Our soggy fields seem to "grow" the fog and there were only hours between the morning fog and the evening fog, as most of the time, the evening fog was showing up in the late afternoon, so we were "in a fog" most of the time. The dangerous part of that was that the deer and elk seemed to be using it as a time to cross the roadways, which...
END/BEGINNING--Here we are on the last day of 2014; New Year's Eve; can you believe it?! This winds up being my last column in 2014 and my first in 2015, so we're ending a speedy year and I'm hoping we're beginning a slower one, as time seems to be passing by all too fast these days. We've got a cold snap coming our way, so I hope you're all prepared and are extra careful while out driving. I hope we come through this latest deep freeze unscathed. Don't forget your outside critters as well. When it's super cold, they need shelter and extra...
WET ENOUGHT?--I'm thinking that most of us got our fill of rain last weekend, as rivers and creeks rose and some of us were facing water over our roads or driveways under water, so it's one of those times which, if we only have a car, we find ourselves house-bound for a short period of time. There were even some areas that a truck didn't matter, you just weren't going through that deep of water. Luckily, it doesn't usually last that long, although high tides did hinder that a bit this time. At any rate, we were inconvenienced but high and dry...
CALMER--After last week ended with such windy, wild weather, we can only hope that this week is a bit quieter and calmer, as falling trees and power outages are not something we want to endure again. Many of us were lucky and kept our power on in spite of several power "bumps" but others on Puget Island or in the Cathlamet or west of here, endured some outages. The road to Longview was littered with limbs and one can see the extensive damage to the guardrails as large trees came down and blocked the road and got the guardrails on both sides of...
CHANGES--We've gone from freezing temperatures to warmer ones, but with that comes the rain. As we begin this week, it wasn't too bad but they say in the next few days we're going to get quite a bit of it, so by the time you read this, you'll be sure to have the umbrellas out and the boots on. The tides have been very high so I hope that doesn't mean we'll be dealing with some flooding issues in our area, but with heavy rains due, it wouldn't hurt to be vigilant if you're in a low-lying area. SPECIAL DAYS--Those having birthdays from Dec. 11-17...
CLEAR AND CRISP--I hope you're all weathering the freezing temperatures that we've been having lately, as it's definitely been crispy out there! If you're out here in the sticks like we are, I hope you've been able to keep your water running and haven't frozen up, as the sun can fool a person into thinking it's warmer out there than it really is; not to mention, some shady parts where water systems are often located, never get thawed out at all, so it's easy to forget to leave the water running and then, oops, you're froze! With temperatures in...
WILD ONE--We certainly had some excitement last Sunday morning as we had a tornado alert for our area! I was certainly happy to hear that the alert was canceled, but with the lightning flashing in front of us and the thunder shaking my windows, and the pouring rain making my driveway look like the Grand Canyon, well, that was plenty exciting enough for me! I was quite happy when it was calm once again. I figured I might as well watch the Seahawks football game and lo and behold, not only did they win, but I saw that it was sunny up there. My...
COLD ENOUGH?--We had temperatures down in the teens in West Valley, but at least we had the clear blue, sunny skies during the day. Of course, a couple of those days were windy and if you were out in that, the sun was just a teaser, as it looked like it should be warm but it definitely wasn't. By the time you read this, we should have warmed up and be back to gloomy and wet, but at least we won't have to deal with the worry of frozen water pipes and icy roads any longer. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Nov. 20-26 are Larry...
READY?--By the time you read this, we may be in the grips of a real cold spell and hopefully you've all planned ahead for it, as it looks like it could be a doozy! Of course, we can hope the worst of it misses us and we manage to suffer a few minor inconviences. With possible high winds, freezing temperatures and maybe even snow, I'm hoping for the "missed us" part. We'll all be watching the weather forecasts closely I'm sure. We hope all our family and friends in the "cold zone" will come through this unscathed! However, It was hard to think o...
WET DAY--As this calendar week began, it was a pretty doggone wet Sunday. I noticed that while it was certainly raining on Puget Island and Cathlamet, it was absolutely dumping here in West Valley, so while we may not be far apart, miles-wise, we are definitely far apart in rainfall amounts.Sadly, we win in that category by a long shot! While I wasn't overly pleased with all the rain, my cousin in California was quite happy, as it has been dry and hot there for ages. Needless to say, I told her...
WILD ONE--Once again, we've had some nasty weather and it gave some of us yet another opportunity to gauge how ready we are for further winter storms that are sure to come. While I was prepared for a lot worse on Saturday, I was terribly thankful that we didn't get the brunt of the storm, unlike other nearby places, like Portland, which took a pretty hard hit with tens of thousands being left in the dark. Folks being interviewed on the news were terribly unhappy when they had to go over a day without power, and some almost two, but should they...
RAINS RETURN--After a fairly decent weekend, it seems we are in for quite a soaking by the time you read this, along with some strong winds, so I hope you have the boots and umbrellas handy as Fall is defintely here, like in falling raindrops! I'm still shaking my head over the fact that we're already three weeks into October, a mere two months away from Christmas, oh my! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 23-29 are Valle M. Ledtke, Nathaniel Norris, Nick Vavoudis, Don Wages, Christie Davis, Victoria Wallin and Joel Havens....
TIME FLYING--Can you believe it? We're half way through October already and by next week, we'll be thinking very seriously about Thanksgiving dinner and drooling over that turkey dinner celebration. Of course, once we do that, then "wham" it's all things Christmas. It just doesn't seem possible! For now, we'll enjoy the Fall and all that it includes, like football! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 16-22 are Heidi Heywood, Michelle Collupy, Brianne Helms, Justin Garrison, Dixie Anderson, Randy Kuhn, Keith McNally, Mike...
TAKING TURNS--It's Fall; that time when you get some sun, you get some rain and everything in between. I hope you're enjoying the Fall colors, although you may not be enjoying the falling leaves, as they make for some miserable yard clean up, clogged gutters and on the road, they can make for slick conditions, but hey, falling leaves is better than falling snow, which some areas have seen already. Now that's bad! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 9-15 are Joan Evenson, Matt Helms, Jeff Baldwin, Justin McClain, Kristina...
PRETTY WET--We had some pretty wet times last week but the sun came out after a rainy spell and boy, did it get steamy. The humidity was almost worse than the hot/dry days, as the mugginess was enough to make one melt. Thank goodness for AC and ice tea; both helped to cool us down a bit. The sunny weekend was great but it sure came with some cooler, super foggy mornings, so it definitely feels like Fall! The rains that returned at the beginning of the week were welcomed by some, but we're told the sun is to have returned by the time you read...
RAINS RETURN--As Fall officially began there was definitely a change in the weather, as when I was headed to bed, the rain was coming down quite heavily and lightning lit up the sky and the thunder shook the house! I'd say the seasons were changing right on schedule! Hopefully we'll still have nice days that forecasters are predicting for the weekend, as I'm not ready to let the nice weather go completely just yet. It seems hard to believe that we are ending another month; time just seems to be flying by, as Christmas is only three months from...
WARM STREAK--How did you like this past weekend? Pretty nice wasn't it?! Considering several things were going on in the area, it was great to have such nice weather for them, even though the late evening hours were a little nippy, the daylight hours were plenty toasty. By the time you read this, we may have seen some showers but it wasn't clear on how long they would last but I know one thing, a few days of some light, yet soaking rains, would certainly help with our fire danger, as this past week has seen mulitple fires in many areas of WA...
SURVIVAL MODE--How did you handle the heat wave last weekend? If you were outside, I hope you slathered up in sun screen and didn't stay out there too long, as it was hot, hot, hot! It was 92 in the shade at our house and time to kick on the AC and hide in the basement as far as I was concerned. However, at the start of this work week, we actually had some moisture fall on us and I'm sure my lawn was happy to get the drink and with everything so bone dry, we welcome any kind of dampness we can get. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays...
HERE WE GO--As one month ends and another begins, we find ourselves enjoying some sunny weather once again! Last Saturday was a pretty damp day for those that were doing any camping, so I'm sure they were happy to see the sunshine come back into the picture for the rest of the holiday weekend. Of course, we had friends who had showers on Sunday morning, while we had sunshine right from the start and it only got cloudy a few times, so I guess it all depended on where you were! However, as we go into "back to school" mode, it looks to be mainly...
STILL WARM--Summer is still upon us as this new week begins and forecasters say it will continue all week, so folks heading out for the big Labor Day weekend should have some nice days to enjoy before the kids head back to school. Of course, there is always that chance that the forecast falls apart at the last minute or the area that you are planning on visiting winds up with a shower or two, but for now, it's supposed to be pretty decent everywhere. Beings we are still dry, the burn ban in our county is still in effect, so if you see someone...
JUST RIGHT--Once we got over a wild couple of days last week with thunder and lightning and pouring down rain, it wasn't too bad, albeit a bit muggy now and then. This week started out with some rain threats but forecasters can't quite make up their minds about that, so who knows what we'll really see coming by the end of the week. Please don't be fooled by the rain we had, as there is still a burn ban in effect and fines have been doled out for illegal camp fires or trash fires recently, so when in doubt, call authorities. FAIR IS DONE--Once...
WAS TOASTY--As the work week began, we were feeling mighty warm, as temperatures were still up in the 80's Sunday evening and were up in the mid-90's on Monday so it was pretty miserable I thought. In West Valley, we were still very hot Monday evening with no relief from any wind, while down at the fairgrounds, the wind was blowing and it must have been 15 to 20 degrees cooler, so a big discrepancy in just a couple of miles. And then there was Tuesday morning, wow, what a thunder and lightning storm that was! I was very glad to see it end, as...
STILL TOASTY--As we go through this first week in August, it's still pretty toasty! However, we have been quite a bit cooler than other areas where upper 90's and triple digits have been closer to the norm. As Monday evening came to a close and bedtime was upon us, it was a very nice 60 degrees here while Portland was still at 91 degrees and very muggy, so it was a great time to be here in Skamokawa! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that our fire danger is high and so there is a burn ban in effect. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...
