  • Halloween is upon us this Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 28, 2010

WET AND NASTY--We are still seeing heavy rains and nasty weather, but that was nothing compared to the weekend storms that rolled through the area; not fit for man nor beast out there! I don't remember when we've had that long of a thunder and lightning event, but it was pretty spectacular. With a foot of snow in the mountains already and a couple of more feet expected, you may need to rethink any travel plans across the passes; keep the chains in the trunk and your emergency kit stocked up as well. If this is a sign of the winter to come, it...

NICE AND NIPPY--We have had some nice Fall days lately, as the sun has been shining since last Friday and it's been great. The nippy evenings caught some of us by surprise, as it was below freezing a couple nights and a thick layer of frost sparkled in the morning sunlight; a reminder that winter is on the way. We need to start thinking about getting ourselves prepared for whatever the next few months brings us. Actually, as I write this, the weather man is saying the rains are on the way, so I hope you've enjoyed these past few days of sunshin...

  • Grangers do good work; need help

HALF AND HALF--What a difference a day made in our weekend. On Saturday it was pouring down rain all day, a real soaker, but on Sunday, after a brief bit of morning drizzle, it was time to shed the rain gear and kick off the boots to strut around in sleeveless tops while enjoying a BBQ on the patio. A super nice day! It was a pretty pleasant Monday as well, so it was definitely a good way to start off the week. BACK ON--I am happy to report that I now have my computer back up and going. Whew, that was a long time without that source of...

  • Two weeks and still without computer

NOT BAD--The evenings are a bit crisp, but the days have been pretty pleasant. While I kept expecting rain with those clouds we had on Saturday, it never showed up and the sun was shining brightly on Sunday after the morning fog, so that was a nice surprise as I thought for sure we'd be seeing some rain by then. This dry weather meant it was time to get the lawn mower out once again and start putting away the patio stuff in order to prepare for the upcoming rainy season. Forecasters say that we could have a miserable winter, so just in case the...

  • Candidates night at Skamokawa Grange

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

FALL IS HERE--The leaves are falling, the rains seem to visit us on more days than the sun and our days turn into nights before eight p.m. these days, so I'm thinking, Summer is definitely over and Fall is here! However, the weatherman said we may get a few warm days this week, so maybe we'll get our webbed feet dried out one more time before this year comes to an end. By the way, when we get these misty, foggy and darker days, it's best to get those head lights on early so that others can see you much more easily. Defensive driving is a real...

WET ONE--As I begin this column this Tuesday morning, it is mighty wet here in West Valley. This took me by surprise after such a beautiful Monday evening which seemed to hold promise of another nice day. The brown yard out front is probably enjoying a drink about now and I won't feel compelled to wash my car or do any yardwork, a win, win for me! I hear we are supposed to experience some clearing later in the day, so for all you folks who need to finish up those outside chores, there's still some hope on the horizon. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...

  • Wine tasting and auction Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 9, 2010

LITTLE MOISTURE--While some folks didn't see any rain as this week began, it was definitely wet in the early hours of Sunday and Monday mornings in West Valley. Luckily it dried up fairly quickly on Sunday and while it was a little breezy, it was fairly decent so a lot of that last minute outside work could still be done. On Monday it was much cooler and cloudier with some rain in the morning, dry most of the day but quite wet by early evening. With this week's weather predicted to be in the 60s with some more showers, I'm thinking it will be...

  • School sports are afoot in the county

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 2, 2010

BEEN NICE--As this work week began, we got a few clouds and sprinkles but it wasn't too bad, as the sun came out and all signs of wetness soon disappeared. However, this Tuesday morning has things much wetter, but I'm sure my plants are loving it, as the ground was hard as a rock and the dirt was nothing but dust, so a little drink is probably a good thing. Last week, the daytime temperatures were in the mid-70s and they were some of my favorites; great if you had to work outside. THIS WEEKEND--The annual chili cook off at the Elochoman Marina...

  • School to start next Wednesday

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 26, 2010

WARM--This work week is starting out real nice and there seems to be a promise of some nice days ahead. While these first two days are supposed to be the hottest, it still looks to be in the 70s most of the week, at least as forecasted at the time of this writing; not too hot or too cold. SCHOOL BEGINS-- It's hard to believe that school will be starting soon, September 1, so Fall sports will be in full swing right off the bat and it will be time to watch for school buses and kids on their way to school in the morning and back home in the...

ENOUGH HEAT YET?--When the temperature hit 97 degrees at my house last Saturday, I was saying "enough already!" Whew, it was hot! But thankfully, we had some cool evenings and the house cooled down so sleeping was easy. Here at least, we went from 97 to 61 in just a few hours! While we cooled down on Sunday, it was still very hot if you went to Portland or Seattle. I thoroughly enjoyed the cooler temps, and I'm sure the critters liked it better too. However, I was still seeing people with dogs in their cars during this heat wave and I just...

  • Silver Buckle Gaming series this Saturday

CLOUDY--As this work week begins, it's pretty cloudy in the morning, but the cloudiness is not supposed to mean any rain. This past weekend we either had fog or morning clouds, so it was good "working weather" in the early hours and then it was time to enjoy the sunshine when it came out around 11 or so; worked out great, I thought, and the temperatures were pretty toasty by late afternoon. It's hard to believe that another month is coming to an end this weekend; we'll be into August and Fall sports before you know it--yikes! SPECIAL DAYS--Thos...

  • Get ready for Bald Eagle Days weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

MIXED BAG--It depended on where you were this weekend as to the weather that you had, as some places were sunny, hot and dry and others were cloudy, misty and overcast all day and some had a little of both. Even as this work week begins, we've had showers in West Valley in the morning hours, which only seemed to let up as long as I didn't try to weed the flower beds, so if you had a sunny day, it was probably because I gave up trying to weed anything and came in the house! If anyone wanted to invent something, it would be the...

  • Summer weather is hard to adjust to

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

HEATING UP--By the time you read this, we are supposed to be experiencing some hot, hot, hot weather and I can hear people complaining already. First it's too wet and cold and then it's too hot, it would have been nice to have a week of dry 75 to 80 degree weather, without going from one extreme to the other. A week ago we were down to 39 degrees one night! At any rate, make sure you take all the precautions that you should during this heat wave, as we will all need to keep our exposure to the sun limited. Wear sun hats, sun screen, drink lots...

  • Smoky Water Follies was great success

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 1, 2010

COOLER--We've started this work week a bit cooler, as we had some cloud cover and some light sprinkles and more are due I hear, but we sure had a great few days last week and a super weekend as well. That was very welcome after such a soggy spell of weather. I think we've not only dried out a bit but we've gotten our spirits perked up as well, as that ole rain was getting mighty depressing. Now I think we are all suffering from aching backs and sore muscles as we try to tackle those overgrown flower beds, lawns, and the weeds in the garden...

  • Follies show to be held this weekend

WHERE IS IT?--As our work week began, so did Summer, but considering it was mostly cloudy and wet, it wasn't the start to Summer that most of us had envisioned. We are promised some nice days at mid-week, and as I'm writing this, we do have some brightness in the sky, so let's hope that these warmer temperatures and brighter days come about, as all these drizzly, cloudy, gloomy days are getting pretty depressing. THIS IS IT--It's here at last: The third annual "Smoky Water Follies" is opening this weekend at the Skamokawa Grange Hall and runs...

SAW THE SUN--Last Saturday was certainly gorgeous and it got flat hot outside. My skin starting turning dark pink after a short time of being out in my flower beds. By the following morning though, it was so foggy and socked in, the ground was all wet and the trees were dripping, so at first, I thought it was raining. It sure was a far cry from the blue skies the morning before. The sun finally came out later in the afternoon but it was accompanied by a lot of wind. Monday brought us more overcast weather, while in Seattle they still had a...

  • Sturgeon derby, car show huge success

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 10, 2010

PERFECT--No matter that it was raining last Friday or that it was just an all day soaker on Sunday, what really mattered was that on Saturday, the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars annual car show and sturgeon derby was basking in sunshine all day long down here in Skamokawa at the fairgrounds and surrounding area! Everyone involved had all been holding their breath all week long, so when I woke up and saw the fog, I knew we'd have sunshine soon to follow, so it worked out perfect! There were over 200 awesome cars and trucks registered this year...

  • Rods and Reels finally here this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 3, 2010

SOGGY--Well, most of this past Memorial weekend was pretty damp I'm afraid. There were a few hours on a couple of days where it was not raining and not too terribly cold, but if you were out camping, you would probably not think this was the most terrific weather for doing so. I know walking around through wet grass or mud puddles is not that much fun, and neither is loading up those wet tents and things when the weekend is over, so hopefully you stayed late enough that you got to dry things out when that sunshine finally showed up about 3 p.m....

  • Grange to get security system after 60 years

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 27, 2010

WET--It's hard to believe that we're at the end of another month and well into Spring, but we are still experiencing plenty of rain. We got a bit of a break on the first day of this work week but as Tuesday morning rolled around, it was pouring once again. The forecast was not looking too great, so we can only hope that a batch of wind shows up and blows these rain clouds elsewhere, as this soggy and nippy weather is sure getting old! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 27-June 2 are Don Anderson, 67'er Linda Toste, Mary Ann...

  • June will be a very busy month

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 20, 2010

MIXED BAG--Last weekend was nice and even as the work week begins, the sun is shining after some night time showers. However, it's pretty wet out there this Tuesday morning, and it looks like rain is going to fall most of the week. I guess we'll have to be busy as beavers while the sun is shining and hope the following weekend is nice, but it only looks like Sunday will be. Temperatures are supposed to drop mid-week and the snow levels are dropping to 3,000 feet so I guess we can't put away those warm jackets just yet. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...

  • Refuge run will be held on May 15

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 6, 2010

SPOTTY--Our sunshine has been sort of hit and miss lately, and the days that had been forecast for sunny last week, were pretty spotty. Wound up being more clouds and rain showers than sun I think. Of course, it all depended on where you were, as I heard some folks were able to mow their lawns, while others would have been needing a snorkel to manage that! It looks like we may have a few days of dry weather by the time this gets delivered, so I sure hope so as the "April Showers" are getting a little old and the hail and the pounding rains...

  • Mother's Day on the near horizon

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 29, 2010

SAW THE SUN--Between the rain and the wind, we did see some sun last week and as this week began, it was nice all day Sunday. However, with rain coming in for the rest of the week, it looks like the rain coats and boots will be staying by the door. The heavy rains and strong winds on Monday afternoon made it miserable and seemed to chill me to the bone; with plenty of rain on Tuesday, it was still a time to huddle by the fire. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 29-May 5 are Shannon McClain, Connie Luthi, Wally Wright, Marcia M...

WAS NICE--We had a pretty nice weekend, although there was rain in the middle of the night on Saturday, but that was okay because it was sunny during the daylight hours and that's all that mattered to most of us. But now the work week has begun and so did the rain. It's this kind of weather that makes things grow like crazy, unless they drown! Let's hope we see the return of the sunshine real soon! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 15-21 are Janine Helms, Bryan Ledtke, Dan Keilwitz, Lori Smith, Floyd McClane, Brock Cothren,...

THE LION ROARS-- We definitely had Spring and April arrive with a roar; wind, rain and power outages were the norm the last few days. It's been boots and galoshes weather rather than sleeveless dresses and cute sandals, which we all thought we'd wear for Easter! Spring sprung a leak, I believe. Let's hope some nicer weather arrives soon as these low and mid 30 degree temperatures at night are keeping the flannel sheets on much longer than expected! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 8-14 are Tim Parker, Kylie Thacker, Paul Tos...

SPRING HAS SPRUNG--Our first day of Spring, March 20, sprang into action with some nice sunshine and temperatures in the high 60s in West Valley, so it was a pretty doggone nice day. We had a couple beautiful days before then, albeit with freezing temperatures in the wee hours of the morning, which dove down to 26 degrees here one night--brr! However, it seems Spring opted to spring a leak as the light rain began to fall Saturday evening and by Sunday, it was down right pouring at times; ah, truly Spring weather! I hope you didn't put off...
