Smoky Water Follies June 25, 26, 27

SAW THE SUN--Last Saturday was certainly gorgeous and it got flat hot outside. My skin starting turning dark pink after a short time of being out in my flower beds. By the following morning though, it was so foggy and socked in, the ground was all wet and the trees were dripping, so at first, I thought it was raining. It sure was a far cry from the blue skies the morning before. The sun finally came out later in the afternoon but it was accompanied by a lot of wind. Monday brought us more overcast weather, while in Seattle they still had almost all blue skies--not fair! By late evening and Tuesday morning, we were back to the rain. They say it's going to get nicer by the end of the week; I sure hope so.

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 17-23 are Jason Ledtke, Jackie Lindsey, Megan Vincent, Tom Parker, Lore Twiet, Dawn Wika, Jerry DeBriae, Lorie Smith, Bobby Helms, Danny Helms, Jack Gorley, Mary Baldwin, Dorothy Reed, Barbara Hanmore, Katie Sechler, and Rhonda Pedersen. Those celebrating anniversaries are Mr. and Mrs. Steve McClain, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Souvenir, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Montgomery and Phil and Elaine Rolf. Here's to all of you and your special days and I hope yours lands on a sunny one this year!

THIS IS IT--The Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds new arena will feel the pounding of horse hooves this Saturday with the first in a series of Silver Buckle Gaming events. If you have a horse, we hope you'll participate and if you just like to watch them compete, we hope you'll watch the games and enjoy a bite to eat at the food booth where the Skamokawa Grangers will be making fresh sandwiches and also serving strawberry shortcake. They will be serving lunch from 10 to 3 on Saturday.

FATHER'S DAY--I hope you've had your thinking caps on as you've only got a few days left to figure out what you're going to do for "good ole Dad" on Father's Day Sunday. Whether it's his favorite dinner or a nice gift card or just a phone call to wish him well, don't forget the "guy" in your life! Here's to all of you men who are great Dads, step-Dads, grand-dads, uncles and sons or are just like a Dad to someone; have a very Happy Father's Day!

ALMOST HERE--The singers have been singing, the actors have been acting, the barbershop quartet has been haromonizing and all other elements of the third annual Vaudeville show, entitled the "Smoky Water Follies" will take place the weekend after this one at the Skamokawa Grange Hall. Tickets are $10 at the Bank of the Pacific either in Cathlamet or Naselle, or ask a granger or cast member, or give me a call. You can buy them at the door as well. The grange is wheelchair accessible. We hope to see you at either of the two evening shows on June 25 or 26 at 7:30 or the matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 27. The doors open a half hour prior to the shows.

REHEARSALS--Just one more reminder for those of you in the show or dealing with the curtains and lights, etc., don't forget the important rehearsals coming up. Band rehearsal tonight, at 7 p.m. with all singers welcomed as well, and then there will be a rehearsal on Saturday, whose time has yet to be decided but call your director for that or check your email. Then Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, there will be the crucial rehearsals at the grange at 7 p.m.

REDMEN HALL--There's a great opportunity at Redmen Hall to meet and greet people, learn about the history of our area and share that with visitors when you become a docent at the hall. There will be a training session on June 26 from 9:30 a.m. until noon, so if you're looking for something to do, why not think about sharing yourself and the knowledge you'll obtain from working at the hall, with visitors that stop by? While you're there, you can check out Rachael Wolford's exhibit on the second floor in the RiverLife Interpretive Center. The hall is open Thursday through Sunday beginning at noon.

BETTER NOW?--I heard our Fair Manager, Lore Twiet, has been under the weather, so we hope she is feeling A-OK by now, but if not, we hope she gets back to a 100 percent real soon. With the county fair only a couple months away, there is a lot to do. For all of us, it means getting our crafts and things together to enter in the fair. Remember kids, you get money for those blue ribbons, so we hope you'll be entering your items in the fair this year too.

LEFT IT OUT--Last week I said that Robert Fritzie was now at the NW Continuum Care Center at 128 Beacon Hill Drive in Longview, but I forgot to mention his room number, which is # 321-A.

CLASS REUNIONS--Don't forget there are a couple of big school reunions coming up. July 24 the decade of the 70's WA-KI-HI graduates will be gathering for old times sake with music and fun at the Skamokawa Grange Hall. If you graduated in those years, we hope you'll contact Susan McClain Kuhn and other classmates of that era and get all the specifics. They will be having an evening meeting at the Riverview on June 26 to iron out more details. One of those in the 70's era was my nephew, Mark Pedersen. He cruised through town last week to check out the grange hall and surrounding park area with another fellow classmate, Bill Talley, and nelphew, Clinton, and they all agreed the place looked ideal. Now to have sunshine for the occasion.

The folks who attended the Skamokawa schools are getting together during fair time for a gathering at Vista Park so if you want to see all those "kids" from the past, they hope you'll stop by. For more information about their every other year, all school reunion, contact Gary Emery at 795-0065.

OUT OF THE PAST--In 1960, June 17-23, the weather was cold and clear and then it got cold and wet for several days before finally turning nice the last couple of days. Donna Healy, soon to be Palmer, was given a wedding shower on June 17 and Grandma Elsie rode with Barbara Eggman and others to Longview for the occasion. Donna received many nice gifts. Norman Ellison, son of Bella Pedersen and Erling Ellison, wed Sharon Rich the following day. Carol, Kay and Marshall Pedersen all headed to Alaska that week just as the weather was getting better. Peggy Pedersen drove them to Seattle to catch the plane. This was the same day that Gertie Healy celebrated her 69th birthday, June 21, and she had a party at the home of her son, Leon and Marian (Everest) Healy. The very next day, Ralph Pedersen called his wife, Peg, and said that the fish were coming in. All were excited with that news. All this from the diary of Elsie (Walker) Everest.
