  • Movie night, bazaar, Tour of Homes ahead

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 29, 2012

I hope everyone had as wonderful a Thanksgiving as we did. This year was the first time I cooked the Thanksgiving meal for several years. We enjoyed the company of my uncle, David Hammonds, my sister, Diane Gray and our son, Shane Cruz, his wife Delena and their two beautiful sons, Emmett and Wyatt. It was a quiet day, but we have so much to be thankful for and enjoyed the day thoroughly, even though we all ate too much. News from Naselle: Sports scheduled for the Naselle teams for the coming week include: junior varsity boys basketball at...

  • Bazaars, home tours on holiday schedule

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 22, 2012

Well, folks, we are now sitting on waterfront property once again. We could conceivably row straight across the field to the Covered Bridge but the current is such that it probably wouldn’t be such a good idea. Water is over the driveway to the tune of probably six feet and will go higher with the continuing rain, so we are in for a few days. The dogs love to go for walks in this weather as they pick the small critters out of the low branches of the trees, just like candy. The wind is especially unnerving today, and likely there will be some p...

  • Election is not over till it's over

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 22, 2012

Like the candidates, I breathe a sigh of relief when the election is over. But it's not over till it's over. Only 20 votes separated Greg Prestegard and Mike Backman. Another 300 or so votes will be counted today (Thursday) at 12 noon, and they may still not settle the race for the District 1 position on the county board of commissioners. Some of the statewide elections are close. The races for governor, secretary of state, and state auditor were very close when counting ended Tuesday evening. Initiative 1240, concerning charter schools, was...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 15, 2012

Wahkiakum County officials wrapped up work on their preliminary budgets for 2013 on Tuesday. Copies of the proposed 2013 budgets should be ready for public distribution next Monday, with a public hearing on the budgets set for December 3. However, officials said there are still big questions to answer: Will the state be able to pay another $100,000 in Criminal Justice Funding? What will be the result of contract negotiations between the county and the county employees' union? What will be the total cost of replacing courthouse computers? The Cu...

  • New sheriff hits the ground on the run

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 15, 2012

Seeking a more peaceful place to live, Mark and Deb Howie purchased property in Cathlamet in 2006. At that time, Mark Howie was a sergeant in the Tukwila Police Department, serving the small city of 19,100 people on the south side of Seattle, and Deb drove school buses. Early on, Howie met Jon Dearmore, undersheriff in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department. The two struck up a friendship and found they had many common interests. The Howies had purchased a house on Columbia Street and a building on Cathlamet's Main Street. They opened an...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 15, 2012

Wahkiakum County commissioners moved quickly through the business portion of their meeting Tuesday before adjourning for a budget workshop. Commissioners authorized Emergency Management Coordinator Beau Renfro to spend $810.76 on signs to notify residents of the location and use of sand and sandbags for flood control. Each winter, the county road department deposits sand at fire departments throughout the county, and Renfro leaves bags that can be filled with sand to combat flood threats. The sites are the Puget Island, Skamokawa, Grays River...

  • Backman takes 20 vote lead

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 15, 2012

Independent candidate Mike Backman has overtaken Democrat Greg Prestegard to lead the election for Wahkiakum County commissioner by 20 votes. Prestegard led 966-946 in initial counting November 6, but after a batch of late arriving votes were counted November 8, Backman had moved ahead by a tally of 1,111 to 1,091. Elections officials will count the last of the late arriving vote by mail ballots and certify the election on November 27. An automatic recount would be in order if the margin is less than 1 percent, 22 votes at this point. Results...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 8, 2012

The Wahkiakum Mule football team shut out the Pe Ell Trojans 32-0 last Friday in a battle for a state playoff berth. The 8-1 Mules will head to Mount Vernon for a 7 p.m. Friday game with the LaConner Braves. The Mules dominated the line of scrimmage against the Trojans, and that opened the way for a good offensive showing. The Mules opened the scoring when Lars Blix passed to Steven Doumit who broke a tackle and scored on a 36-yard run at 4:07 of the first quarter. Gunnar Blix kicked the conversion point for a 7-0 lead. L. Blix passed to...

  • Town, groups study acquisition of nursing home

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 8, 2012

Local groups are analyzing whether or not they can economically use the shuttered Columbia View Care Center. Eagle Health Care, Inc., closed the care center this summer, citing economic reasons. This fall, the building's owner offered the facility to the Town of Cathlamet for the price of $1, and now local groups are studying to see whether or not they can use the facility. Mayor George Wehrfritz said Friday he hadn't planned to have public discussion of the process, but word leaked out. He has formed two groups to investigate the feasibility...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 8, 2012

  • Holiday bazaar this Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 8, 2012

Winter is here, it looks like. The leaves seem to be more colorful this year for some reason. Maybe because we haven’t had much frost. Hunting season is definitely in full swing. Lots of hunters out and about so don’t forget to keep an eye on your pets, especially if they don’t like gunshots. I understand that quite a few animals have already been taken. We had a great weekend as we took a quick trip to Redmond. Ore. for the opening of Smith Rock Brewing Company, the new brew pub and restaurant owned and run by our daughter Danielle, her husba...

The Mules led 27-6 at halftime, but Pe Ell controlled the third quarter and gave the Mules a run for the money in the second half. "We can't look past them," Mule Coach Eric Hansen said Monday. "It's the playoffs. You have to win to stay in. We have to focus on this game." The Trojan offense relies on two workhorses, running backs Devin Topelt...

  • Lots to do in coming weeks in the Westend

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 1, 2012

My deepest condolences to Lori, Kaelee and the rest of the Dearmore family on the sad loss of Jon. He was a friend to all and his community service will never be outdone. He did much to get the Westend of our county recognized in a positive manner. May he rest in peace. I had hoped to start my column back up much sooner than this but I must say, it has taken some time to get back to any sense of normalcy since Del’s stroke. He is making progress daily with his right side movement in his leg and arm and is beginning to say a few words. This h...

The win ended the regular season for the Mules; they finished with a 7-1 record in the Central League. They had already clinched second place; they'll host the winner of this Friday's Toutle Lake-Pe Ell football game on November 2 in a crossover game with a state playoff berth on the line. After a scoreless first quarter, the Ducks caught the Mule pass defense in a blown coverage and took a 7-0 lead....

  • Port 2 works on plan, office

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 25, 2012

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 discussed updating plans and acquiring a new office building when they met October 16. Commissioner Kayrene Gilbertsen suggested the port acquire a park model unit for a temporary office to replace the current quarters, which are deteriorating. Locating the unit inside Skamokawa Vista Park would save the expense of municipal sewer and water fees, for it would be connected to the park's systems. It could be used until the port can afford to build a permanent office, and then it could be converted into...

Some of the funds will be allocated to professional fees to make sure permits are in place...

  • Mules fall to MWP; head to Toutle Lake

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 18, 2012

How good are the number one ranked Morton/White Pass Timberwolves? Pretty darn good, if you asked the Wahkiakum Mules, who were victims of a 51-6 defeat at the hands of the T-wolves last Friday. Both teams entered the game with perfect 6-0 records. The experience the visitors carried with them--they finished second in the state 2B playoffs last year--paved the way to the lopsided win. "It was ugly," commented Mule Coach Eric Hansen. The Mules kicked off to the T-wolves, and on the first play, MWP quarterback Ryan Reynolds slipped on the wet...
