It sure is nice to have so much sunshine lately. I might even get the lawn mowed one more time before the rains make it impossible. The chill in the morning and evening air are sure signs of fall making an appearance, but the leaves haven’t really had much of a change in their colors yet. Derek Heitsch has brought some of his cows in to graze on one of our fields for a few days. It’s fun to watch them and not have the responsibility of taking care of them. Does that make me lazy? News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle Comets on the...
In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen. They actually had the typed page turned sideways on the screen. Thank goodness our son Carl was here, as I had no idea how to fix that problem. But on the other hand, they sure are cute and they love all the dogs. I guess we’ll keep them. Our hot tub h...
It will be back to court for Wahkiakum County and the Washington Department of Ecology in their suit over the county's biosolids ordinance. Last Friday, a Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge rejected Ecology's motion for a summary judgement and said he wanted more facts before making a decision. The county adopted this year an ordinance that allowed application of only Class A biosolids in the county; Class B and septage biosolids, which aren't treated as highly as Class A, were prohibited. Ecology sued, claiming that state law gives the depart...
It's back to the drawing board for Columbia Land Trust and plans for a new slough on the Kandoll Farm below Rosburg. With Wahkiakum County commissioners and the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District, the land trust has been working on plans to address erosion of privately owned dikes on Seal Slough and the flooding problems that have plagued Kandoll Road landowners since the land trust embarked on a salmon habitat restoration project on the former Kandoll family farm at the end of the road. This past summer, the group and consulting...
Wahkiakum County commissioners heard requests to add personnel to two departments when they met Tuesday. Commissioners also passed a resolution taking over responsibility for appointing a manager for the county fair and handled a variety of other business. The board started to hear a request from Sheriff Jon Dearmore to add a new position, emergency services director, but postponed the dicussion upon learning that they hadn't received supporting budget documents from the sheriff's office. Dearmore and Undersheriff Mark Howie have been working t...
I am now the proud owner of (or maybe owned by) two new kittens. They both come from feral heritage, and were raised and nurtured by a dear friend. Alwen and Isabel are gray and white, long haired with stubby tails and are the most loving kittens I’ve ever seen. As I sit here typing, Alwen is asleep on my right shoulder and Isabel is in my lap curled in a ball. They have only been here in their new home for about two hours, and already have settled in. News from Naselle: Keep up the good work, Naselle Comets. Congratulations on the win last F...
Commissioners of Port District No. 2 on September 20 approved their preliminary budget for 2012. Port commissioners also discussed fees and cross connections with members of the Westside Water System board of directors, and they passed a resolution adopting financial policies, procedures and an internal control system. The port's budget for 2012 shows several cuts from the 2011 budget, include no money budgeted for the part-time position of Manager Bob Robinson, a $20,000 reduction. Overall, the 2012 budget shows revenue of $322,083 and...
Wahkiakum County government may be facing yet another revenue shortage. Treasurer Paula Holloway reported Tuesday that although revenue from timber harvest may be up for the year, other revenues are down about $450,000, and the trend will likely continue next year. State Criminal Justice money is coming in at reduced rates, she said. An installment is due this week, and state officials have said it will be 65 percent of original allocation. Criminal Justice money funds law enforcement, courts, and prosecution and can be used for other...
The Cathlamet Town Council met in special meetings Tuesday to address three issues. First, the council approved a proposal to end a moratorium on new building permits for the Glengate addition. The council adopted the moratorium last year when it appeared the developer and home owners association weren't working together and weren't completing required road construction. On Tuesday, Donal McIntosh, representing the developer, said the association had met and come up with a plan to accomplish the work. They proposed setting up an account with...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday handled a variety of business ranging from modifying the assessor's budget to hearing citizen input on the state's Discovery Pass. Assessor Bill Coons presented several requests for budgetary action and had mixed success. Commissioners approved an $8300 expenditure from the department's Professional Fees line item to host a week long training on the department's computer program. The expense will cover costs of a Chicago based consultant's round trip air travel , lodging and meals, rental car, and 40 ho...

The district has already granted an easement for a permanent access road to the plant site, but that road will run uphill, and...
Mules beat Pe Ell 34-7 for homecoming. The Wahkiakum Mules rolled over the Pe Ell Trojans for a 34-7 win in the Mule homecoming game last Friday. The Mules did what they wanted to do on offense, and the defense kept the visitors under control. Wyatt Parker scored the first of his two touchdowns for the night at 7:29 of the first quarter by catching a pass from Lars Blix, breaking a tackle and streaking to the endzone for a 76-yard scoring play. Blix kicked the conversion; he made four of five...

Cathlamet town government leaders announced Monday that they're taking steps to resolve issues about management of the Cathlamet Fire Department. The department has been the focus of state auditors in the past 12 months, and Mayor George Wehrfritz has taken steps to take over management of the department, which has been operating on a 1932 ordinance that puts management of the department under control of the former Cathlamet Commercial Club. Auditors released their reports last week (see coverage in the September 15 edition of The Eagle). Fire...

Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow said it is possible that the judge hearing the case may listen to arguments, adjourn the hearing and reach a decision at a later date after going over the briefs in the file. In a special meeting on Monday, The Cathlamet Town Council adopted a resolution establishing that all normal fiscal management functions of the Cathlamet Fire Department shall be performed by town staff. Last week, Mayor George Wehrfritz had ordered town staff to cease handling department accounts. In a letter to council members, he said that he had been advised by the town's risk management advisor that under the existing ordinance governing the fire department, the council, not the mayor, has authority to direct or handle fire department...
Wahkiakum County may soon restore the position of emergency management coordinator. The position would be responsible for developing emergency response plans for the county and for coordinating the county's response in emergencies. The position was cut from the sheriff's department budget several years ago as county commissioners reduced staffing to cope with anticipated revenue shortfalls. On Tuesday, however, Sheriff Jon Dearmore and Undersheriff Mark Howie outlined a plan to restore the position by combining funds from two continuing grant...
The Washington State Auditor's Office on Monday released the long awaited report on the Town of Cathlamet for the years 2008-09. Overall, the auditors said the town's financial statements presented accurate positions and complied with state laws. However, auditors identified two conditions which they called "significant enough to report as findings." These are: 1. The town, council and management do not sufficiently monitor the fire department, placing public resources at risk, and 2. The town, council and management do not sufficiently...

Wahkiakum County residents may soon be able to obtain their annual influenza vaccinations. Dr. Alan Melnick, county public health officer, said vaccine supplies are being shipped and will be available soon. "It's not too soon to be vaccinated," he said. "The vaccination will last through the flu season." People should contact their primary health care provider to obtain vaccinations, said Judy Bright, county health department administrator. Dian Cooper of the Cowlitz Family Health Center, which operates the Cathlamet clinic, said the center...
