They are: Seniors--Alex Bighill, Chase Chapman, Cody Cooley and Taylor Wasmundt; Juniors--Robert Eaton, Trevin Leeland*, Lidia Sanchez, Austin Smith, Cramer Smith*, Rachel Underwood, Christopher Walkowiak*,...

The change will help in going after funding grants, Lahti and Virkkala said. Funding...

  • Fire destroys one home, damages another

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 16, 2011

A Saturday morning fire left a Cape Horn couple homeless and damaged another house before firemen could extinguish the flames. "We lost everything," home owner Don Fullerton said Tuesday. Fullerton had come home from work a little after 2 a.m. Saturday, he said. Sometime after 5 a.m., a noise like someone throwing rocks on the metal roof of their three-level house awoke him and his wife, Virginia. The house was on fire and the heat was causing the metal roof to pop and buckle. They left in a hurry wearing only their pajamas. "I grabbed my...

I understand that several people have been having some issues with their telephones and their service through Wahkiakum West. I also had some problems. When I spoke with Carol Larson at the Wahkiakum West office, she asked that I put the word out for everyone who is having a problem, please document the time, date, phone number of origin and/or destination, your phone number and exactly what was going on, then e-mail it to her at clarson@wahkiakumwest.net. • Chamber named area development agency

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 9, 2011

Despite some concern, Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday named the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce the county's associate development organization (ADO). The board signed a contract with the state Department of Commerce that will make the Chamber eligible for a variety of state economic development programs to be conducted in the area. The Chamber succeeds the defunct Lower Columbia Economic Development Council. Because of loss of funding, the LCEDC and the Wahkiakum Community Foundation this past winter folded themselves into the...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 2, 2011

In a replay of a situation that occurred in the 1990s, local officials are becoming concerned with erosion along Steamboat Slough Road. The section of road lies on a dike separating the Columbia River and the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer. The river is 90 feet deep in some places in that area, and the thalmud, or deepest part of the river, lies close to the bank. In 1997-98, Wahkiakum County, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Diking District No. 4 developed a project to armor the bank,...

  • Ecology sues county over biosolids ordinance

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 26, 2011

The State Department of Ecology filed suit this week in Cowlitz County Superior Court to overturn Wahkiakum County's new ordinance regulating biosolids. The suit claims the county's ordinance conflicts with state law. "The ordinance there prohibits an activity allowed by state law when conducted pursuant to a valid state permit," the suit says. "Because it forbids what state law permits, it is in violation of article 11, section 11, of the state constitution." Ecology requests that the section banning application of Class B biosolids or...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 19, 2011

Commissioners of Port District 2 discussed dredging and other issues when they met Tuesday. Two Skamokawa residents asked the commissioners to work to get someone to dredge the mouth of Skamokawa Creek. It's almost impossible to get a boat in or out of the creek at low tide they said. "I was born and raised here and I've never seen it like this," said John Peterson. Commissioner Brian O'Connor, a Skamokawa resident, agreed there is a problem with siltation. "That's why no one wants to use our boat launch; it's filled in," he said. The group...

  • Open space: County's process for classifications is flawed

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 19, 2011

For years, Wahkiakum County land owners have taken advantage of a state program that gives property tax payers a break if they commit to leave large parcels of land in either timber or agricultural use. However, during a recent review of the county assessor's office, state Department of Revenue personnel said the county's process for putting parcels into the open space program is flawed and may have incorrectly awarded many open space classifications. The officials have urged Assessor Bill Coons to seek a new county ordinance to define the proc...

  • Legislators seek attorney general opinion on biosolids

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 19, 2011

District 19 legislators have asked the state attorney general for an opinion on how much authority counties have to regulate the application of biosolids. Wahkiakum County recently passed an ordinance banning the application of all but the highest treated class of biosolids, and the state Department of Ecology has threatened to sue, claiming that state law gives the department, not counties, the authority to regulate biosolids application. Senator Brian Hatfield and Representatives Brian Blake and Dean Takko signed the letter to Attorney...
