A Puget Island man's dog was killed while he was taking it for a walk last Friday. Roy Simpson had stopped to talk to a neighbor while walking his dog along West Sunny Sands Road near Svensen Park. While they were visiting, Simpson said, the neighbor's dog suddenly came out of the garage and attacked his Yorkshire Terrier, which was on a leash. "Within five seconds my dog was dead," Simpson said. "He never heard it coming." Simpson believes the neighbor's dog, which appears to be a Husky/wolf mix, has accosted people and is a dangerous dog. He...
by Rick Nelson The Onalaska Loggers overpowered the Wahkiakum Mules for a 56-20 Central League football win last Friday. Once again, the Mules fielded a small squad--16 suited up for the game--with underclassmen having to do battle. "Our starting center got sick Friday and went home at noon," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "Two two-way starters are ineligible because of grades, and we had to suspend a kid last week because of a training code violation." The Loggers scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 22 and four yards. They boosted that...
And so we have an election upon us with measures of utmost importance. Well, maybe. Two initiatives, I-594 and I-591, deal with gun control. I-594 would tighten rules on gun sale background checks in a state effort to keep guns out of the hands of people with felony convictions or who have a history of mental illness, sex offenses or domestic violence. People now may take advantage of a loophole in state law that doesn't require the same level of checks at gun shows or over the internet. If the initiative passes, all sales would have the same...
Local elk hunting activists are hosting a meeting next Wednesday to present information on elk hoof rot disease. Dan Cothren, a Wahkiakum County commissioner, has been lobbying the state Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to act on the issue for several years. The disease causes a hoof to become deformed, and the animal subsequently goes lame and dies of starvation or predation. It is widely affecting elk in Cowlitz, Wahkiakum and Pacific counties and is found in other areas. WDFW biologists have tried to determine the cause of the disease...
The short agenda of Wahkiakum County board of commissioners meeting Tuesday covered items ranging from utility connection fees to reorganizing the Public Works and County Road departments. Rosedale businessman Bob Jungers raised the utility issue with an email suggesting the board "reconsider the agreement you have with the Town of Cathlamet regarding the $3,000 fee for new (sewer) hook-ups" in the lower Boege Road area. "You are into that project, I believe, for $312,000 for eight years with a return of zero, and a benefit to constituents and...
by Rick Nelson The young Wahkiakum Mule football team took another blow in the chin with a 47-6 loss last Friday at Morton/White Pass. The Mules received the opening kickoff and marched deep into MWP territory, but a blitzing defender stole a handoff. The Washington State Auditor’s Office has released its 2013 audit reports for the Town of Cathlamet, and the auditors have recommended changes in oversight for certain procedures. Regional Manager Steve Ogden first reported that the county should receive $1.3 million this year, up slightly from the estimate earlier this year. However, Ogden estimated 2015 revenue at $746,000, down from $850,000 estimated earlier this year. Ogden said markets had declined, leading him to...

An end may lie ahead for the never ending story of Cathlamet's decorative street lighting project. The town council will hold a special meeting at 3 p.m. next Wednesday to discuss with its consulting engineers how to pay for the latest addition to the project's cost. Several years ago, the council began replacing old street lights with new, decorative lights as street improvement projects occurred. The new lights are seen on Broadway and 2nd streets, and new lights are scheduled for Main Street this year. However, delays and adjustments have...

Health center Executive Director Dian Cooper reported that one of the clinic's two physician's assistants, Kat Harshman, has resigned and will move out of the area for another job at the end of October. The other, Val Clark, who had been working on a temporary contract, has signed a full time contract. The center has started re...
The Napavine Tigers rolled over the Wahkiakum Mules for a 48-0 Central League football game last Friday. They followed that by stripping the ball from a Mule ball carrier on the next series, setting up another short touchdown. "The floodgates came open," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen. The Tigers scored four times in the first quarter...

The Town of Cathlamet will add over $100,000 to its revenues this year with the harvest of timber. In 2013, with timber prices at high levels, the town contracted with forester Bill Olsen to harvest 93 acres in three units of town timberland on Bradley Mountain. The timber was previously harvested in the 1960s. The first 33 acre unit has been logged, but with a decline in timber prices, the town may hold off on logging the second and third units to see what the market does, town Treasurer/Clerk Tina Schubert said this week. So far, the logging...

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday gave the Department of Health and Human Services authority to negotiate a purchase of land for a housing development and a possible new Health Department campus. The 6-acre parcel is on the north side of SR 4 near the Main Street intersection and adjacent to the new Town of Cathlamet Wastewater Treatment Plant. Last year, Health and Human Services considered buying land on the east side of Cathlamet but backed away when a consultant reported the land had drainage problems. The new site is owned by the...

Wahkiakum County commissioners have some advice for department heads as they start developing their 2015 budget requests: Don't get your hopes up. Commissioners met Tuesday with Auditor Diane Tischer and Treasurer Tammy Peterson to go over the county's financial status and review revenue predictions for 2015. The predictions aren't good, Peterson said. For instance, the most recent projection of revenue from state-managed county trust timberland is $855,000 for 2015. This year, Peterson said, the county should receive $1 million in trust...
Wahkiakum County commissioners approved a pay increase for employees, discussed the trend of hunters paying for access to private timberlands and acted on other business when they met Tuesday. The board formally approved a 2 percent pay increase for most county employees. The raise is retroactive to January 1 of this year. Commissioner Blair Brady, the board's negotiator, said he doubted there would be a raise next year because of a decline in revenue (see related story in this issue). In other business: Rosburg resident Poul Toftemark urged...
