I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. She may have had to travel some distance to make it back home as she was quite emaciated, but is recovering nicely. I love to tell happy stories. Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. It looks like more is on the way, so guess I’d better do a little stocking up. My husband and I watched our dogs run down the hill from the house on Sunday and followed to see what they were after. What a gorgeous winter wonderland to wake up to this past weekend. I’m sure not everyone thought of it that way, especially if they had to drive to work. We had a wonderful surprise visit from our daughter and son-in-law when they showed up on Saturday. What a week! I hope all the readers had a wonderful Christmas. We certainly did, as well as the few days prior to the holiday. I spent last Thursday afternoon at the birthing center in Astoria, and at 7:05 p.m., we welcomed our 11th grandchild, 8 pound 8 ounce Wyatt Lee Cruz to the world. He was 22 inches long. Wyatt is the second son for Shane and Delena, and he was eagerly hugged by big brother, Emmett, about an hour after he was born. Life is certainly a miracle. It didn’t look good for our trip to Oregon last week when we got up on Wednesday morning. Lake Fred (our hay field) had raised its ugly head and the driveway was flooded. Thank goodness for our van, which we ended up driving as the Volvo couldn’t make it through the water. My wonderful sister, Diane, even had to miss a day of work as she couldn’t get her car out. Well, the temperatures have shown us that winter is just about here, along with the high winds last week and snow over the weekend. Our walnut tree still had all of its leaves on Saturday, but after the freeze Saturday night and the wind, it was completely bare of leaves by Sunday afternoon. It sure is nice to have so much sunshine lately. I might even get the lawn mowed one more time before the rains make it impossible. In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen. I am now the proud owner of (or maybe owned by) two new kittens. They both come from feral heritage, and were raised and nurtured by a dear friend. Alwen and Isabel are gray and white, long haired with stubby tails and are the most loving kittens I’ve ever seen. As I sit here typing, Alwen is asleep on my right shoulder and Isabel is in my lap curled in a ball. They have only been here in their new home for about two hours, and already have settled in. I don’t know about you but the warm rain was quite refreshing at the beginning of this week. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sunshine, but when it gets above 80, it’s too hot. That was one of the many reasons to leave California. The farmers making hay probably didn’t appreciate the rain much as many of them are still trying to get the bales into the barns, and there are still quite a few bales in the fields.
