"Wait Till Next Year" might be the theme of the Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team after their trip to the Class 2B state tournament last weekend in Yakima. The Mules put a team without any seniors on the court and were out after losing their first two matches. However, they say it was a great experience that will help them in the future. "Participating in the state playoffs was fun and a great experience," said Mule Coach Jeff Rooklidge. "There is a lot of talent in this group and they have an opportunity to achieve good things in the future if...

NOT NICE--As this work week begins, it is cold and wet and nasty looking out there, so a good day to stay in and sit by the fire or, in my case, start typing! Let's hope we can all keep a grip on what we have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and to spread Christmas cheer each and every day, and not just during the Christmas season, and keep the celebration of New Year's in our hearts all year long, so we can appreciate each new day! SPECIAL...

Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce board members Richard Erickson and Sandi Benbrook-Rieder attended the budget hearing portion of the meeting to advocate for the port to establish a funding contract with the chamber in place of the relationship it had formerly held with the Lower Columbia Economic Development Council (EDC). In 2010, the port contributed $2,500 to the EDC. As of...

As Wahkiakum County officials prepare for the final phase of their budget preparation for 2011, they realize all could change next spring. The state legislature will have to deal with another significant revenue shortfall, and that could significantly change the county's revenue outlook. "We're up in the air till we see what the legislature does," said Commissioner Blair Brady, who spent the past week at the meeting of the Washington Association of Counties and had budget discussions with state officials. "We're in a holding pattern until we...

Supporters of the Cathlamet Fire Department jammed the River Street Meeting Room Monday to tell Mayor George Wehrfritz to back off from efforts to change financial oversight of department accounts. Wehrfritz and department officers began butting heads in September with the release of the town's proposed 2011 budget. In it, Wehrfritz proposed cost-cutting measures such as having department trucks and ambulance use Wahkiakum County's fuel dock instead of commercial gas stations and also having the First Aid Division pay a share of administrative...
submitted by Karen Bertroch On November 27, the Appelo Archives Center will bring back an old tradition at the "Appelo Shopping Center" when Santa Claus will be available upstairs from noon to 4 p.m. Children are encouraged to bring their parents and grandparents so a multi-generation photo can be taken with Santa. Photos will be sent out right away so families have a keepsake. For many years, parents brought their children to the Appelo Shopping Center and followed the pink shoe prints painted on the stairs to find Santa. The Center is...
To The Eagle: The Cathlamet Fire Department has existed for 70 years and this totally volunteer group has served the county well over the years. The people who serve in it are dedicated, hard working and provide a quality of service which is better than some paid departments. Two former area firefighters, one from this outstanding organization, the other from Fire District 4, were instrumental in establishing the Volunteer Firefighters Pension System in Washington State. For the mayor to chastise the Fire Department over the single incident of...
To The Eagle: In reference to the article in The Daily News on November 9, George Wehrfritz wants to force Jerry DeBriae out as chief of the Cathlamet Fire Department. Who does he think he is? Jerry and Linda have done nothing but support the department for many years. Does the Mayor even know that if it was not for the DeBriaes, there would not be a beautiful new Cathlamet Fire Department complex? Doesn't he realize that all of the fire departments and first aid divisions are volunteer and everyone gives of their time to keep our county safe?...
To The Eagle: As you may or may not know, we have in Wahkiakum County some of the best emergency services and a Sheriff's Office which is very much a part of this community, as shown by the recent election. Our fire and ambulance services, which are volunteer, are far better than many private or full time salaried emergency services. Our people are experienced, fast to respond, efficient and very caring. Their response time compares to paid responders and in many cases, is quicker. Any mistake made has been corrected and they are moving...
To The Eagle: Unfortunately we have a serious disconnect between the Cathlamet volunteer Fire/EMS and the town/state/budget/? This needs to be resolved, now, by reasonable people sitting down and coming to reasonable conclusions. It is worth bringing in an experienced peacemaker to broker the peace and get this situation fixed, now. Cindy made a very moving statement regarding volunteers toward the end of the meeting which left me wondering what life in our town/county would be like without the many volunteers who work huge periods of time lead...
