  • A Wahkiakum County survival guide

    Mar 21, 2024
    1

To The Eagle, Following last week’s head-scratching opinion piece on retraining farmers, I couldn't help but feel the urge to rally a few of us Eagle readers – you know, us common folk – to brainstorm a 'new resident survival guide' for those mulling over a move to Wahkiakum County. I’m just spitballing here, but why not kick things off with a chapter on conducting your own due diligence before making that big home-buying or renting decision? We'll offer some serious advice, urging potential buyers to dig into the area's history, local economy...

  • Welcome...But

    Mar 21, 2024

To The Eagle, In regards to the letter from E.S. Simpson. We welcome newcomers to our community but why do you want to change our way of life? I was born and raised here. My dad, Mel Coates, was the local butcher, cattle hauler and owned a frozen foods locker plant before people had home freezers. There were many dairies, most locals were farmers, fishermen or loggers. People fed their families by hunting deer and elk in season. We are a rural area and many people move here because of this. You are welcome but please respect our way of living....

  • When in Rome...

    Mar 21, 2024

To The Eagle, There is an old expression that you could benefit from: when in Rome, do as the Romans do. The fine citizens of Wahkiakum County do not need anyone to come in from the outside to tell us how to live our lives or what direction on the moral compass to follow. We do not go to Portland or Seattle and force our lifestyle there. We would appreciate the same in return, but it has been my experience that that is never the case. Furthermore, veganism is a relatively new concept to humanity. For thousands of years mankind has eaten meat....

    Aspen Anderson Washington State Journal|Mar 21, 2024

Washington remains 51st in the nation for police officers per capita, and one answer to that problem might be allowing officers to work part-time. SB 5424, sponsored by Sen. John Lovick, D-Mill Creek, awaits the governor's signature. “The idea behind these flexible work schedules is…intended to increase the diversity in Washington law enforcement,” Lovick said. “To increase the presence of female officers and to retain senior officers who have a lot of value to provide but cannot maintain a standard 40-hour work week.” His goal is to have a 30...

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 21, 2024

NICE WEEKEND Well, I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the sunny days. I have to say as I begin this column, it is foggy and I swear those ships tooting their foghorns are about ready to come into my back yard. The sun should be showing up soon. It's hard to get all the yard work done when we only get a few days of decent days in a row, not to mention those projects that require more than a day or two to accomplish. Then again, we are just into the first week of Spring, so we shouldn't be too surprised that the clouds are springing a...

  • Trumpets of Spring

    Stacey Lane|Mar 21, 2024

Daffodils announce the coming of springtime, heralding in the warmer days like nature’s trumpets. They can be seen planted in flowerbeds, along roadsides and in abandoned homesteads. They are usually a brilliant shade of yellow, which contrasts with the new green grasses and rainy spring skies. Daffodils are perennial bulbs. In order to bloom in the spring, the bulbs need to experience a period of cold temperatures to promote root development, which is why they don’t grow well in hot cli...
