    Apr 1, 2010

WILD START--The last week in March is beginning pretty wild with wind, rain, thunder, lightning and power outages. Does this mean April will come in like a lamb? Sure hope so! From the sounds of it, we're going to have a pretty wet week, so keep your eyes on the creeks and dikes and report any flooding to the Sheriff's Office immediately. I didn't hear any flood warnings yet but that can always change, so it's best to be on our toes! As today is April Fools Day, I hope you aren't getting fooled too much, but if you were the victim of a really...

  • Trap shooting hobby leads men to new challenges

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 1, 2010

When it comes to knocking clay pigeons out of the sky, Fred Hoven and John Didricksen are starting to get the hang of it. The two Cathlamet men took up trap shooting eight and 10 years ago under the tutelege of the late Johnnie Ray Anderson. After his death, they began working with the Cathlamet FFA trap shooting team, one of Anderson's pet projects. Besides working with the high school shooters, they travel the West to compete with novices and masters. "That's one of the great things about the sport," Didricksen said Tuesday. "You can be...

  • Grange News

    Krist Novoselic|Apr 1, 2010

The election for the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District board will be on April 27. There has not been an election for quite some time and I’m finding that many are unaware of the way the district conducts the voting. It appears the rules for the election are set up with landowners and taxpayers in mind. For example, school funding levies used to have a sixty percent threshold to pass – the intention was to provide a balance for citizens who pay the property taxes. Instead of a supermajority threshold, voters in the district will have wei...

  • Voters should consolidate port districts

    Apr 1, 2010

To The Eagle: The recent firing of Port District 2 Manager Steve McClain has resulted in many letters and a lack of understanding why this happened. It is my opinion that the Port 2 has been a time bomb for years and Steve was in a bad place. In years past I attended the meetings of both port districts. I experienced very different environments. Port District 1 meetings were respectful. Port 2 meetings were confrontational. I remember one frustrated Port 2 commissioner saying, "If you think you can do a better job than I am doing, then you can...

  • GRHED commissioner election coming up soon

    Apr 1, 2010

To The Eagle: Attention Grays River landowners! Soon we will be asked to elect three commissioners for the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District. Being a commissioner is not usually a coveted position because their tasks are both exhausting and thankless. When a seat is vacated, finding a quality replacement can be difficult. But this year, our active commissioners are each facing a challenger for their position. Our current commissioners are Delvin Fredrickson, Poul Toftemark, and Bill Karwoski. I believe we owe them both our support and...

  • Understanding true self interest

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 1, 2010

It appears the turmoil surrounding the adoption of President Obama's health insurance reform bill is starting to die down. Supporters are hailing the bill as landmark legislation which will provide health care coverage to those who need it and rein in escalating health care costs that are becoming a bigger and bigger drain on our nation's economy. Critics lambast the bill as government intrusion into the lives of citizens and claim it won't do what it says it will do. They've begun targeting congressmen who voted for it, hoping to be able to...
