  • Live fire training benefits community

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 13, 2023

All the firefighters in Wahkiakum County are volunteers. Each week, they show up to their departments for education and training, but rarely do they get to practice their skills in real, but controlled and safe ways. Thanks to Brett and Sharon Deaton who donated a house on their Elochoman Valley property, the volunteers got to practice exterior firefighting methods at a live fire on Saturday. It was a win/win/win situation. The training benefits the firefighters, and thus the community, but it...

  • Interest rates boost county's 2023 revenue

    Rick Nelson|Apr 13, 2023

Wahkiakum County's finances are in decent shape, Treasurer Tammy Peterson reported to the county board of commissioners on Tuesday. With the improving economy, interest rates paid on county invested money are also boosting revenue beyond expectations. In other business, officials discussed the need for a system for department heads and staff to cover advanced expenditures; the board went over bids for a variety of projects, and citizens and commissioners spent 20 minutes discussing policies regarding sport and commercial fishing. Peterson said...

  • A happier story offered about poisons

    Apr 13, 2023

To The Eagle: A contributor’s letter asking “Who’s shaking the jar?” reminded me of the parable of the 6 blind fellows who each handled a separate part of an elephant’s anatomy before likening the beast variously to a wall, snake, spear, tree, fan and a rope. They couldn’t individually encompass the whole of it. I’m not blind. I write frequently and forcefully to describe the many parts making up the whole, terrible nature of that symbolic elephant now trampling upon our civil liberties and national discourse. A different writer stated that ...

  • Why do we let crazy people kill our children?

    Apr 13, 2023

To The Eagle: Any person that shoots a child is CRAZY!!! It’s so simple. The gun didn't wake up one morning and decide it was going to shoot someone, it didn’t aim itself at a child and pull it’s own trigger, a crazy person did! Crazy people are born every day! We can’t stop that in the foreseeable future. Millions are born with all kinds of problems. We used to put them in institutions, because families couldn't take care of them, local agencies did not have the resources to handle them, and it was more humane than letting them walk the str...

  • Biden blamed Trump for Afghanistan withdrawal

    Apr 13, 2023

To The Eagle: For seven years the Biden regime kept accusing Trump with false allegations they could never prove. The latest is unspeakable; an allegedly one time sex with Stormy Daniels that supposedly happened 17 years ago. How in hells bells did they come up with 37 counts for an allegedly one time sex as a felony? If it did happen, so what? Nothing to brag about. Let’s face it, many of our past presidents had mistresses to frolic with; only a handful of presidents were ever faithful to their wives. What has the media not reported? The CCP p...

  • Corrections/Clarifications

    Apr 13, 2023

In last week's story about the SeaPerch qualifier at the Cathlamet pool, the second place Naselle team was incorrectly identified as the Bobbleheads. They are the Bubbleheads. In last week’s Eagle a story about the Northwest Voices event to occur on April 24 in Longview, listed the time of the reading at the Longview Public Library as 5:30 p.m. That time has been changed to 7 p.m. It was erroneously reported in last week's paper that a large abandoned boat sinking at the Elochoman Slough Marina was removed thanks to teamwork by salvagers and m...

One more Wahkiakum County resident succumbed to covid-19 in the last week bringing the total number deaths attributed to the virus to 12, according to the Washington Department of Health, while the cumulative number of reported cases and hospitalizations remained unchanged at 644 and 50. Disclaimer: With the easy accessibility of at home tests, the actual number of active covid-19 cases and actual cumulative numbers in the county are hard to know. While 70.8 percent of the population in...

  • Mark May events on your calendar

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 13, 2023

SOGGY HOLIDAY--As the atmospheric river made its way to the area on Sunday, we definitely saw a super soggy Easter, so it’s a good thing most Easter Egg Hunts were done on Saturday around here so as not to be totally drenched; whew! According to the forecast, it looks to be a wet start to the week but we’re due for some dry days by mid-week and even a dry weekend. I won’t hold my breath as that keeps changing but I sure hope it’s true. I’m also hoping the “slight chance of flooding” is non-existent but just in case, we’re all set here at our...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Apr 13, 2023

My friends, it was bound to happen. I got Lois Burkhalter's dates mixed up, so I'll try again. She was born in 1940, not married in 1940. Yes, I'm embarrassed, but there's more. They came to Naselle in 1964, not 1966, and she had their four children in the years 1960-1970, not 1950-1960. May I simply say it was an "Off Day" when I wrote that? Lois, I am very sorry. I really should have caught at least one of those. I sincerely hope all the information this week is correct, lots of dates and...

  • Washington salmon fishing seasons tentatively set for 2023-24

OLYMPIA – Anglers in Washington can expect similar salmon fishing opportunities this year compared to 2022, with some improved opportunities in the ocean driven by better Chinook forecasts and another large coho return, state fishery managers announced. The 2023-24 salmon fishing seasons, cooperatively developed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and treaty tribal co-managers, were tentatively set Thursday at a week-long Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) meeting held in Foster City, Calif. "These seasons were c...

  • SUD program serves the community

And there are other less willing p...
