  • Museum acquires stone Chinook plank house marker

Kari Kandoll, Wah. Co. Historical Society|Aug 4, 2011

During one of our Wahkiakum County Historical Society meetings last Fall/Winter, Ralph Keyser asked the board to look at the storage lean-to during the meeting. There is only natural light that comes through the semi-transparent panels so the eyes have to adjust to low light. We made our way towards the back of the building looking at different things as Ralph pointed them out. One of our board members, Roberta (Elliott) Trotter a Chinookan tribal member spotted a carved stone sitting on a lower shelf of a small wooden stand. She asked why...

  • DNR scrambling to replace county timber revenue

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 4, 2011

Fluctuations in timber markets and legal wrangling in courts is having an effect on the revenue Wahkiakum County will receive from harvest of timber on its state-managed timber trust lands. Timber revenue is an important part of the county's Current Expense Fund budget and contributes about $1.12 million per year. Steve Ogden, district manager of the Department of Natural Resources, which manages the trust timberlands, reported Wednesday that the county could have a good year in 2011 and a bad year in 2012. Agency foresters are taking steps to...

Wahkiakum County Health Department officials will soon contact local organizations to remind them of requirements for public food permits. Department officials reported their plans for community education to the board of county commissioners on Tuesday. Health department officials have wanted to impose a hard and fast deadline for temporary food permits, and commissioners had asked for a public education process before that step was taken. • Board of Equalization sets plan to adjust Island tax assessments

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 4, 2011

The Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization announced Wednesday evening a plan to update property values for Puget Island land parcels. The board annually hears appeals of property assessments, and, when Islanders received their assessments in 2010, the board had 170 appeals. Normally, the board has around 20 appeals, said Chair Nick Nikkila, and so the board decided to look at the assessments. They found a hodgepodge of value classes set by an appraiser who retired in early 2010, Nikkila said, and neither the new appraiser nor board members wer...

  • Ancient Chinook wedge joins FOS collection

    Ruby Murray|Aug 4, 2011

The Wahkiakum Chinook wedge that a Portland couple found in 2008 is a welcome addition to the Friends of Skamokawa’s collection, said FOS archivist Keith Hoofnagle. The seven-inch long wedge shows the chipping that formed it. Native tribes made wedges of varying sizes from wood, often yew, or from antler. European immigrants used wedges to split logs also, according to local historian Irene Martin. Chinook wooden wedges were wrapped at the top with a cedar withe to keep them from splitting when hammered by stone mauls. “That was their nyl...

  • Credit where credit due to board, assessor

    Aug 4, 2011

To The Eagle: Property owners of Wahkiakum County, we must give credit when credit is due. The Board of Equalization held a meeting for the property owners on Puget Island, July 27. The meeting represented at least four months work for the board working against huge odds such as the State doing everything in their power to keep tax assessments as high as possible with total disregard to the true market value of the property. The previous appraiser used a bewildering and impossible grading system which led to many properties being very much...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 4, 2011

It looks like summer has actually arrived. Gardens are finally growing, farmers and making hay, and the sun is shining for more than a couple of hours a week. I guess we had better enjoy this break as it may be gone in a week, if Mother Nature stays true to form. Speaking of haying, Darrel Sotka just pulled in with his mower to mow our fields. I hope he doesn’t get lost in the high grass. Don’t forget the summer activities going on at the Timberland Library in Naselle.
