  • State's poet laureate visits Cathlamet

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 2, 2017

Last Thursday, Tod Marshall, the 2016-2018 Washington State Poet Laureate, stopped by the Cathlamet Library to talk about his duties and experiences and share some poetry and ideas. Marshall was raised in Kansas and is a proud Jayhawk; through a soccer scholarship, he began a rather lengthy education, first at an undergraduate school in Michigan. He still plays soccer today, though he admits more slowly and less skillfully. He studied English and philosophy before continuing on to earn a...

  • Change comes to Westend library

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 2, 2017

“We worked so hard. We felt so proud that we were able to do this community center. I thought of it as a legacy. They are just dismantling all the work we did instead of focusing on other things that needed to be done.” —Penny Gregory, former Johnson Park board member By Diana Zimmerman A rift at Johnson Park may eventually be a double blessing to the Westend community. There may soon be two free libraries, both largely possible because of Trudy Fredrickson. When Fredrickson and the new Johns...

  • It's chaos at the top with top-down government

    Rick Nelson|Feb 2, 2017

President Donald Trump has been in office less than two weeks, but he's working hard to implement his campaign promises, from walling out Latin American immigrants to prohibiting people from certain Muslim-majority nations from entering the US. Here are some of the headlines, as reported by the Associated Press: --Trump pulls US from Transpacific trade pact; --Trump's border wall faces reality check; --Trump denies immigration restriction caused airport chaos; --Anti-Trump protesters gather again in Seattle; --Hundreds march in downtown Spokane...

  • Kalama and our river are being threatened

    Feb 2, 2017

To The Eagle: If you haven't heard of "Cancer Alley" please look it up before you decide it's a good idea to build the largest methonol plant in the world, right in our neighborhood. I live on Puget Island and my family supports the following groups: Wildlife Center of the North Coast, Portland Audubon Society, Columbia Riverkeepers and Columbia Land Trust. Every single one of these groups are steadfastly against the approval of the proposed Kalama Methanol project. Why? Because for the past 20 to 30 years they've done their best to mitigate...

  • We need the media in order to stay informed

    Feb 2, 2017

To The Eagle: In regard to last week’s excellent article about journalism’s value, I thought the writer’s perspective that media plays an important role for all of us was spot on - regardless of our political slant. Being a democracy, it is crucial that all of us are as educated and informed as possible when we vote. If everyone spent just 20 minutes or so a day reading a variety of news sources about domestic and world events, political decisions, local events, etc., we wouldn’t need to worry about fake or biased news. This is because we’d be...

  • Writer concerned about future of the country

    Feb 2, 2017

To the Eagle: I hope I'm not being paranoid, but I had family members who were in the Normandy landing and fought on Iwo Jima against the very same thing that is happening here and now. Alternative facts? The dog ate my homework is an alternative fact but even my third grade teacher knew I was lying. Early in the eventual complete takeover of German society, the news was demonized and the one person who knew how to fix everything said all reporters were liars and barred them from what passes for a White House press briefing. Excuse me. I could...

"We came out ready to play," Coach Todd Souvenir said, "and did a great job in the first quarter. Santos Wright...

  • Valentine dinner will be at Grange Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 2, 2017

MILDER/THEN COLD?--We had a few days of warmer temperatures around here but still had some freezing mornings in West Valley, so it hasn't exactly been a heat wave! Still, it's certainly better than the massive flooding, snowfalls and freezing rain episodes that were happening in other parts of our country. I am hoping that my weather app is really wrong, as it says we could get a little more snow by the time you read this, but just in case it's right, take it easy out there! INTERNET WOES--It seems like whenever it's time to turn in my column,...

Each of the kids were welcomed into the office of Matt Nichols (the executive vice president) with a hand shake and introduction. Matt is a 3rd generation boat builder. His grandfather started the business at this same location in Freeland, WA on Whidbey Island. When they bought the property it was an old run down saw mill and the...
