It might be said “Who are you to tell us about trees?" I may know more or less about trees than most, however, from my observations, clear cutting of our forests leaves an ugly scar on the landscape that will clear up in time. I just do not like the way it looks and the impact it has on the environment. I highly sympathize with those who are employees of the logging/lumber industry and in no way want them to lose their jobs. Is there a better way to make wood products without destroying the beauty of our forests while being able to maintain t...
Robert Wegdahl, 91, of Longview, was born in Vega, Norway, to August and Hilda (Pedersen) Wegdahl. He died in Longview on December 23, 2018. Robert attended Cathlamet schools. He served in the Army during World War 11, and retired as a commercial fisherman in 1995. Robert was a member of the American Legion and the Elks. He was a Husky and Mariner fan but cheered loudest at his granchildren’s sporting events. Robert enjoyed fishing at Willow Grove and Puget Island, going to casinos, golfing, d...

Members of Puget Island, Cathlamet, Skamokawa and District 4 fire departments will hold their annual Fill the Boot Fund Drive for Doernbecher Children's Hospital this Saturday and Sunday. Dressed in turnout gear, members of the departments, including First Aid divisions, will invite passing motorists to stop and put a financial donation in a fire fighter boot. Skamokawa resident Steve Rabelos and his wife, Patricia, need a little help. Trouble for the couple multiplied when Steve began exhibiting signs of a stroke not too long ago. It took a bit of convincing, but Patricia was finally able to talk him into seeing a doctor, and on Jan. 9, Steve went from the clinic in Cathlamet to St. John Hospital in Longview and later to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver. According to Patricia, Steve had surgery to remove most of a glioblastoma multif...
On Saturday, Eric Hansen, a teacher at John C. Thomas Middle School in Cathlamet, received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Washington at the 71st annual Youth Program Awards Banquet in Yakima. There are three categories for the teaching award: grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. As the state winner for middle school teachers, Hansen is now being considered for a national award. The national award winner will be announced in the next couple months, according...
By Rick Nelson Wahkiakum County's property tax and special assessment collections will decline 15 percent this year, Assessor Bill Coons announced at the weekly meeting of the county board of commissioners on Tuesday. Coons said total property tax and special assessment collections will be $4.15 million in 2019, down from $4.9 million in 2018. This is a reduction of $733,680, he said. The overall levy rates are decreasing 20 percent because of a combination of factors, Coons said. First, the state legislature backed off the State 2 Education Le...
The effort to recall the mayor and three members of the Cathlamet Town Council will take another step next week. A hearing is scheduled at 11 a.m. in Wahkiakum County Superior Court to review the proposed ballot synopsis and determine the sufficiency of charges. Meanwhile, the council will hold a special meeting today (Thursday) at 3 p.m. in the Cathlamet Fire Hall to consider using town funds to pay, according to a notice of the special meeting, "the necessary expenses of defending [the mayor and three council members] in a judicial hearing...
To The Eagle: Formally registered as the Cathlamet Pioneer Center, but known by many as the old Pioneer Church, the building that anchors the corner of Main and Columba Streets in Cathlamet was built in 1896. For more than a century it has served as a worship center, meeting hall, Senior Center, movie theater, wedding site, performing arts center and most notably, the visual icon of the Town of Cathlamet. It has literally weathered storms that required FEMA dollars to restore the building for use. With the assistance of grants, cash donations...
To The Eagle: I was pleased to discover that the county will be providing some funding for Cathlamet Public Library in 2019. They have budgeted $3,000 for the town library and the same amount for Johnson Park's library room. The library board had voted for a greater increase for out-of-town library cards in December when it was told that there would be no county support, and had reconsidered for a lesser increase at the January meeting since our library is open less hours than similar size libraries with higher fees. The new county support,...
EVERYTHING--Now that we are at mid-month, we have been having a bit of this and that, like some hail, some slick icy conditions, some wet and windy conditions and even some sunshine with moderate temperatures during the daylight hours so that's not too bad for this time of year. I could do without the 20 something degree temperatures at night but it beats the massive cold and snow front that has hit our relatives back east, so I won't complain much. According to my classmate, Sharon Stout Servis, it was only seven degrees at her house in Indian...

After receiving many wonderful comments regarding my last article while out and about preparing for this article, it came to my attention that some clarification is in order. First of all, I have done years of research on this topic and I am only giving you a synopsis. As a younger man I have had the opportunity to fall trees, work in several lumber mills, and as part of a large tree planting crew I planted Douglas firs in Southern Oregon. What I have written can be proven. One of the best...

January 8 — 12:44 a.m. A caller reported that a water main was leaking in the Rosedale area. A representative from the Town of Cathlamet believed the problem was on the customer’s side and advis...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to request membership in the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments and listened to reports from the general manager and auditor at their first meeting of the new year last Wednesday. General Manager Dave Tramblie reported that the PUD took advantage of some recent foggy, cold weather to pull out a rarely used infrared camera to inspect substations at both ends of the county as well as their main feeders. They found no...
Wahkiakum County commissioners stepped back from selling a house in Cathlamet and explored issues regarding burgeoning technology costs when they met Tuesday. In a public hearing about the board's proposal to declare the Johnson House surplus and put it up for sale, commissioners heard comments that caused them to reconsider the sale. The house had been used by Health and Human Services until the county acquired the former United Church of Christ building, now called the Hope House. Commissioners had suggested the county would be better off to...
When representatives of local governmental and public service entities got together Tuesday, they covered a lot of ground ranging from economic development plans to the recall effort of members of the Cathlamet Town Council. The representatives get together every three months in forums sponsored by the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Council of Governments (COG). While most speakers had positive news to share, Council Member Sue Cameron reported town government is under a lot of strain. The clerk/treasurer is ill and unable to work, so an interim...
To The Eagle: As librarian I must regretfully announce that it has become necessary to increase fees for out-of-town library cards at Cathlamet Public Library. Half of our patrons live outside the town limits, but the county has declined to add support for the library to their budget for 2018 or 2019. The Library Board of Trustees voted at their January 3rd meeting to raise the cost of an out-of-town children's card to $6, an adult card to $15, and a family card to $23. These fees are still below what other libraries of similar size but with...
WET/COLD--We ended one year and began another with a couple of things in common: they were both freezing cold and they both delivered outstanding sunrises and sunsets, and I mean just extrodinarily gorgeous ones! I was happy to see the 20 degree temperatures go away, but I was wishing that the warmer temperatures didn't come with quite so much rain, but that's the way it goes around here. Of course, as we started this work week, we began with some heavy sleet in some areas, which caused school to open a little late, and caused some very dicey...
