Vernon G. Olson, 91, of Cathlamet (Puget Island) died on January 28, 2019 at St. John Medical Center in Longview. He was born in Longview on September 19, 1927 to Selmar “Sam” and Hilda (Nordine) Olson. The family moved from Ryderwood to Cathlamet when he was young, living at Crown Zellerbach family camp in the Elochoman Valley, then moving to Puget Island. Angie Whitehead has opened a little shop on Main Street in Cathlamet, where she sells lovely and fun handmade decorative items. Whitehead and her two sisters, Daria and Donna, have filled the shop with their creations, handmade and re-purposed from items they find at auctions and thrift shops. Wahkiakum Superior Court Judge Donald J. Richter on Friday ruled that charges to recall Cathlamet's mayor and three council members were legally insufficient to proceed toward election. Cathlamet resident Bill Wainwright had filed the charges alleging misfeasance and malfeasance and violation of oath of office against Mayor Dale Jacobson and Council Members Sue Cameron, Jean Burnham and Ryan Smith. The Town of Cathlamet came away with two recommendations after a Washington State Auditor's Office audit in late fall. Overall, the auditors said they found no problems with the town's numbers. However, they pointed out that the town clerical staff has only one person who can monitor cash receipting and disbursements. After nearly 12 years of serving at the River of Life Assembly of God in Cathlamet, Pastor Mark Phillips has retired. "My plans were to pastor this church until I was 72," Phillips said, "but the pain caught up with me." NICE BEGINNING--This week began with some cool temperatures and lots of fog in West Valley, but the sun that followed was certainly enjoyed! We had the same thing at the end of last week, as Saturday was dry and decent too, so having a whole weekend dry was a big plus. Hobart Leroy Thacker, "Hoby" died at 95, on December 22, 2018 in Longview. He was born on October 30, 1923 in Chandler, Oklahoma to Garrett and Fannie (Leffler) Thacker. He graduated from Barnsdall, Okla. High School in 1942 and attended Community College before joining the US Navy in 1943. The effort to recall Cathlamet's mayor and three council members took two steps forward this week. In a special meeting last Thursday, the council voted to pay initial legal expenses for the four respondents to the recall petition. On Tuesday, the petitioners and respondents appeared before Superior Court Judge Donald J. Richter for a hearing for a ruling on whether or not the charges for recall are specific enough to meet legal test and whether or not the ballot synopsis proposed by Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney was acceptable. The Cathlamet Town Council started 2019 with a light agenda for their first meeting of the year. Council members voted unanimously to give employes a 3 percent cost of living adjustment. Interim Clerk/Treasurer Sylvia Costich said the increase would amount to approximately $10,613.38 without considering overtime. The raise is retroactive to Jan. 1. The council also voted to the employee portion of a new state family leave assessment. The cost will be about $853.43 per year, Costich said. NICE START--It was a nice sunny day on Monday, so that was great. This followed a decent night in which we were actually able to witness the lunar eclipse, which we had really not expected to see, but were lucky enough to have just enough visibility and the parting of fog and clouds, to wind up witnessing. While other folks got to see the "blood moon" part of it, here at my house we didn't see that aspect of it, but oh well, at least it was neat to see the full moon "disappear" before our eyes! Robert Wegdahl, 91, of Longview, was born in Vega, Norway, to August and Hilda (Pedersen) Wegdahl. He died in Longview on December 23, 2018. Robert attended Cathlamet schools. He served in the Army during World War 11, and retired as a commercial fisherman in 1995. Robert was a member of the American Legion and the Elks.
