  • WHS golf team injured in 5-car accident

    Rick Nelson|Apr 19, 2018

Members of the Wahkiakum High School golf team were among the injured in a five-vehicle traffic accident at 1:25 p.m. Thursday. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, the team was in a 2005 Ford Excursion, fourth in a line of eastbound vehicles stopped for highway maintenance work near milepost 44, about two miles west of County Line Park. A 2014 Ford F350 pickup driven by Niels W. Paulsen, age 84, Centralia, collided with the team van from behind and pushed it into the vehicle in front, causing a chain reaction. Van driver...

  • Cathlamet waterfront park plan is moving on

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 12, 2018

In January, a group from the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program presented the final draft of the waterfront park concept plan to all who worked on the project. Since then, the town planning commission has reconvened to go over the plan and make some additions and corrections, according to Kerrie McNally, the clerk-treasurer for the Town of Cathlamet, in order to get it ready for the next step--fundraising. Cathlamet resident Robert Stowe, a former...

  • Commissioners, representatives go over their issues

    Rick Nelson|Apr 12, 2018

Legislative and lobbying issues dominated the meeting of the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners on Tuesday. The day started at 8 a.m. with a regional forum featuring state Senator Dean Takko and representatives of Congresswoman Jamie Herrera Beutler and US Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. Topics ranged from this year's legislation in Olympia to the slow progress in completing permit applications for beach nourishment. The legislature had some successes and still has some work to do, Takko said. They passed a bill to address the...

  • Property tax limitation law/policy needed

    Apr 12, 2018

To The Eagle: I think the property tax is mostly due to attitude. I found our county’s assessors on my property before I had my full coffee last spring and I told them they needed an appointment. I was informed by the assessor they could come on my property whenever they wished and indicated they would without my permission. I told them to leave and wound up with a tax increase of over 100 percent. It’s not just how the property is assessed, it’s unnecesary attitude. We are a small enough community we don’t need that. If I remember correct...

  • The devil is in the details

    Apr 12, 2018

To The Eagle: Bill Coons, Wahkiakum’s assessor running for re-election, gave a rather detailed defense of his evaluation of Ms. Hamp’s mobile home property (March 29, 2018 edition), but his closing argument fell flat when he exclaimed, “In fact, a MH on land in the Elochoman sold late last year for $245,000!” Anyone familiar with the valuation and property appeals system would know that the cut-off date for comparable market value sales for the 2017 tax year would be December 31, 2016. According to my research, the sale with which Mr. Coons s...

  • New exhibit at Redmen Hall opens Friday

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 12, 2018

SOGGY & BREEZY--At the end of last Saturday, we were sitting here looking at two inches of rain on our weather meter, so it was definitely a wet one. While some areas got hit with some strong winds, we here in West Valley had some gusts but nothing as bad as what we first feared, or close to other storms. We woke up to a very wet Sunday, and actually, a little more wind than we thought we'd have. Plus, after looking at the rain gauge, it was a bit shocking to see that we'd already had two inches of rain by noon, so while we thought Saturday...

  • Town, county work on speed limit proposal

    Rick Nelson|Apr 5, 2018
    3

Officials from Wahkiakum County and the Town of Cathlamet on Tuesday set the parameters for a request to lower the SR 4 speed limit to 35 miles per hour. County commissioners will prepare a draft, and once town officials have reviewed and approved it, they'll send it to the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The request is the latest step in the two entities' plan to slow traffic between the intersections at Boege and Elochoman Valley roads to address safety concerns. The officials agreed they wanted to present a unified request...

  • More unhappy citizens deal with assessments

    Apr 5, 2018

To The Eagle: I found Lori Hamp’s letter [March 22, 2018 edition] about her experiences with the property tax appeals system in this county to be right on. But Mr. Coons reply seemed evasive and defensive, as if he were running for something. And then Mr. McClain [March 29, 2018 edition] reminds us that indeed there is an election coming for Mr. Coon’s position. Ms. Hamp is absolutely correct that it is a frustrating, time-consuming, deliberately arcane form of harassment and intimidation that most people who have gone through it once would not...

  • Like cows bawling at the fence

    Apr 5, 2018

To The Eagle: In a book titled Yamsi, about cattle ranching in Oregon, the author/rancher laments about suckering in after the first snowfall and putting out winter hay too early. Then the snow melts and the cows and calves stand at the fence ignoring good green grass, bawling for their hay delivery. That’s a pretty good analogy for the condition we’ve gotten ourselves into vis a vis government and local problems. After that last horrendous school shooting in Florida there was a lot of constructive talk about protecting our kids and our schools...

  • Lack of respect; you must do better

    Apr 5, 2018

To The Eagle: I can't believe the comic you ran in last week’s paper during the most holy week for Christians. This hurtful inappropriate piece of not at all funny trash depicting Christ at Gethsemane with his disciples. Let me point out that the paper came out on the same day Christ would have been at Gethsemane, a peaceful place which is where Jesus spent the day before being crucified. Is there anyone except a hateful person who find that funny or appropriate before Good Friday and Easter Sunday? There should be letters of outrage to the p...

  • My mother was right

    Apr 5, 2018

To The Eagle: April is so great! You get your tax refund and magically you get to use it to pay your first half of your property taxes, not buy a new car, not to go on a cruise, not to buy a boat---my mother told me “Life isn’t always fair.” And again the poor local Assessor is under fire giving your property a value that you don’t like---unless you’re going to sell this year. Well, here is the enigma of the Assessor’s numbers: He is only right when he is extremely lucky. His crystal ball spewing values is always behind what is happening i...

  • Coverage was outstanding

    Apr 5, 2018

To The Eagle: Thank you for the outstanding coverage and related article on the recent travails of the Wages family. While the incident involving the sheriff’s office was a matter of public record, the story by Diana Zimmerman was a deeply personal account of the struggles of a well-known family in the community. The article pointed out the efforts the family has made as well as the legal constrictions the mental health providers must deal with. News articles are often devoid of the broader picture. The comments by Sheriff Howie and U...

  • PUD planning for water main contingency

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 5, 2018

General Manager Dave Tramblie on Tuesday presented a plan to deal with any potential water main breaks on the Puget Island bridge while the Washington State Department of Transportation makes repairs at the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting. Tramblie recently hired a Seattle company that uses drones to get a video of the length of the water main in order to assess its condition. He presented the two minute video to the commissioners. The video showed a spot on the north end of...

  • Welcome to new mail carrier, Shelby Hoiland

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 5, 2018

SOME GOOD/SOME BAD--Thank goodness we had a nice day on Saturday after some morning clouds, as it made the Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt a big hit, and all the doings at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds were much more enjoyable as well. With my weather app saying snow was due, I was a bit shocked, but by golly, many areas wound up with white on Monday morning; yikes! Let's hope that's the end of the winter weather. For now, it sounds like we are going to have a pretty soggy week ahead. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 5-11 are...

  • Sheriff's Report, April 5, 2018

    Apr 5, 2018

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: March 26 — 7:49 a.m. A motorist was reported for driving past a school bus that had its stop paddle extended. 7:52 a.m. A caller reported that a sheep was down in a neighbor’s field. A deputy investigated and found the sheep on its back, unable to right itself. The deputy helped the owner roll the sheep back on its feet and watched as the owner took the animal to a covered area and fed it. 9:17 a.m. The Cathla...
