SNOW RETURNED--We woke up to a light layer of snow in West Valley this past Sunday morning, but places just a bit higher in elevation saw several inches of snow come down. KM had several inches and the Beaver Creek area saw a good amount too, which was ideal for sledding and snowboarding, so it just depended on where you were as to how much you got. It looks like Mother Nature has decided to cooperate with the calendar and as I complete this column I watch big puffy snowflakes falling outside and actually sticking to the ground. Cecelia Jean Cooper, 84, of Cathlamet, died February 16, 2018 at the Longview Hospice Center. She was born January 29, 1934 in Los Angeles, Calif., to Paul and Leota Brennan, the oldest of three children. Together we acknowledge and share our joy in the gift that her life was to us and her beloved friends, and the pain that her passing brings. To The Eagle: I reviewed the report on the town’s meeting regarding sewer rates. The council is deciding whether to charge customers a flat fee or charge on the amount of usage. We all know the fair way is to charge on usage. Responding to an article in last week's Eagle, a representative of the firm "doxo" contacted The Eagle to explain the company's business model. The article reported that some Town of Cathlamet utility customers had encountered doxo's website while searching for the town's website and used it to pay their bills online. The customers had been charged for the service and asked town staff about the fees. NICE--We started last weekend with some very chilly temperatures, below freezing on Saturday and Sunday morning, but the sunshine that followed was nice to see in place of the cloudy, often drizzly day we had on Friday, at least out our way! The advancement of technology has changed a lot in the last 50 years. The Wahkiakum 4-H Robotics Club brought their robots to the Senior lunch in Cathlamet on Thursday, February 8 to talk about what they are using to learn programming. On display was small Wedo robots that the younger kids work with, an underwater robot, a drone with a camera, and an EV3 robot. A short demonstration of the EV3 was given. A utility payment processing company has been taking payments for both the Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum PUD utilities without permission and charging a fee as well. "I have had two customers ask me why they have to pay $7 to pay their bills online," Cathlamet Clerk/Treasurer Kerrie McNally said Tuesday. "The town does not charge our customers for this." After many years of public service, former Mayor Dick Swart decided to retire from the town council at the end of 2017.
