    Kelly Shumar|Nov 16, 2017

Greetings from the Community Center! The free book exchange is still going on. Starting next week we will have a full book shelf out front because we received a generous donation from our friends out at Grays River Valley Center Library. This Friday’s movie will be an adult documentary called “The Unbelievers.” This 2013 film follows Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss as they speak publicly around the globe about the importance of science and reason in the modern world, encouraging others to cast off religious and politically motivated appro...

  • WHS science students work with partners

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 9, 2017

Wahkiakum High School science teacher Jeff Rooklidge and a group of his students visited the 7th Annual Coastal Marine Resource Committee Summit, which was being held in Cathlamet last week. Rooklidge, with a little help from some of his students, gave an overview of some of the educational opportunities he has been able to offer in the last five years. He realized that the kids were more engaged when they got out in the field, so he began trying to find partnerships, and new ways to make that...

  • Election update: Jacobson overtakes Waller in race for mayor

    Rick Nelson|Nov 9, 2017

The election for mayor of Cathlamet took a turn in the second round of tallying votes last Thursday. Incumbent Mayor Dale Jacobson claimed a narrow lead in the election, 69-65, over write-in candidate Laurel Waller. When votes were first counted Nov. 7, Waller led 58-53. Waller had filed as a candidate for Council Position 5, and she leads write-in candidate Jean Burnham, who was appointed to the council earlier this year, 96-42. Waller has said she would take the office of mayor and forfeit the council position if she were to defeat Jacobson....

To The Eagle: One year ago this week thirty states of our union of states elected our president, Donald Trump. Let us, all of us, join together and celebrate this momentous occurrence. The change he is bringing will be beneficial and lasting to our dear country. We, the people, would love to experience a good economy again and a stronger more centered nation. Positively. • Marijuana store opens near Cathlamet

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 9, 2017

The Freedom Market, a recreational and medicinal marijuana dispensary, opened its doors in Cathlamet on October 1. The shop already has locations in Longview, Kelso, and Ilwaco, and owners jumped at the opportunity when a license in Wahkiakum County became available. "We were interested in expanding close to home, but far enough away that there was still a demand for it," Manager Rachel Bratton said. According to Bratton, Freedom Market carries a lot of local product including marijuana grown...

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 9, 2017

CHILLY OUT--Last week ended quite wet and a bit chilly, and for some areas to the north of us, as well as in the mountains, the "white stuff" was falling! Classmate, Greg Lloyd, said it was snowing pretty good up there in Everett and others said it was getting quite white out, to which I responded with a "Keep it up there please" request! I hope you used that extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning to snuggle down under the covers and stay warm! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Nov. 9-15 are Jordyn Kattari, Jonnie Knowles, Pat...

  • Thomas Middle School hosts chess tournament

    Darrell Alexander|Nov 9, 2017

On Saturday, November 4th, the chess tournament held at the John Thomas Middle School was titled the First Cathlamet Open. I was recently informed by Rick Nelson, the publisher of The Wahkiakum County Eagle, that he had played in a tournament in Cathlamet back in the late 1960's. So Saturday's was not the first tournament, yet it did not make a difference to the entrants. Chess is the game of kings and the king of games. The game of chess goes back nearly fifteen centuries originating in...

  • Local sees protests in Barcelona

    Nov 9, 2017

Returning recently from a trip to southeast Asia, Cathlamet resident Jim Kolberg stopped in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He sent this photo and wrote, "Last night I arrived in Barcelona after flights from Perth, Australia. My Airbnb happens to be around the corner from Barcelona City Hall, and there's lots of political action." The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona has been the center of the region's separatist movement that has become a major crisis for Spain....

  • Halloween comes to life in Cathlamet yard

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 2, 2017

Steve Powell and his wife, Celeste, know how to get in the Halloween spirit. They know how to get into the Christmas spirit too, but that's another story. The couple live on Jacobson Road in a house that cannot be missed. There are holiday flags and lights. There are spooky inflatables and animatronics taking up their entire yard, and decorating the outside of their house. Their garage has become a tiny haunted house filled with screaming creatures with red eyes and moving parts. Dracula sits...

  • Recyclers will not become criminals

    Nov 2, 2017

To The Eagle: Let me begin by thanking our county commissioners for saving the county recycling program. Throughout this process to decide whether to continue the recycling program at an expense to Wahkiakum County without reimbursement of tax dollars from the state, several county officials and commissioners stated concerns that “if the recycling containers were not available to residents, there would be an increase in illegal dumping.” As an avid recycling family, we are concerned that the people running our county think we will become cri...

  • Waller has background and experience

    Nov 2, 2017

Editor’s Note: Under our guidelines for Letters to the Editor, we say, “4. Political or election-based letters will be run until the week prior to the election.” So, the two letters below normally would not have been run. However, as they involved candidates running for the same office, it seems fair to each. To The Eagle: I am writing to endorse Laurel Waller for town council. I share Laurel’s concerns about the town. I believe her background and experience could help the town. As a Main Street business owner, she will bring a much needed...

  • Quotes from Thomas Sowell shared

    Nov 2, 2017

To The Eagle: I’d like to share a few quotes from Thomas Sowell that I think you would find thought-provoking: If people in the media cannot decide whether they are in the business of reporting news or manufacturing propaganda, it is all the more important that the public understand the difference, and choose their news sources accordingly. The big divide in this country is not between Democrats and Republicans, or women and men, but between talkers and doers. It is amazing that people who think we cannot afford to pay for doctors, hospitals a...

  • Gift of camera starts artist's career

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 2, 2017

Story and photo by Diana Zimmerman Robert Stowe, a recent transplant to Cathlamet, has done a little bit of everything, so it makes sense that he might tackle art in the same manner. Stowe was one of seven kids, the son of a military man. He was born in Aurora, Colorado, at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. The family moved to Germany, then to Camarillo, Calif., to Oxnard Air Force Base. Then they moved to Texas. "Big Spring, Texas," Stowe said."Worst place I've ever been in my entire life. If you...

  • Walk 'n' Knock Food Drive is set for this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 2, 2017

MIX OF WEATHER--We have had some gorgeous fall days, and we've had some "so-so" ones like this past Sunday, which was cloudy and gloomy and dampish, but it wasn't pouring down rain at least. Monday was awesome but then our temperatures are going to get colder and wetter I hear, so it's just that time of year I guess, so the warm days are probably a thing of the past from now on. SET CLOCKS BACK--Don't forget, this is the weekend to set your clocks back one hour, so before you go to bed Saturday night, be sure to do that, or you'll wind up...
