To The Eagle: We have a good community, and it takes a lot of hard work from everyone. When Ryan and I moved to Cathlamet three years ago, we noticed the element of community right away and fell in love. We have received so much support and made many friends. In the climate of seemingly endless uncertainty our country faces, I must confess to moments of hopelessness. However, when I attend local Health & Human Services advisory board meetings, I walk away with hope again. Wahkiakum county is full of caring, hard-working, creative—genuinely g...
To The Eagle: As military veteran, public servant, just living in America, I have happened to notice that we are a nation of assimilation! I may not like a neighbor, but I will defend their right to free speech. And expect patriotism. Change starts with you. If you go directly to violence instead of a public office, or activism, non-violent, your agenda is a loser, and you need help. My ancestors were immigrants. We crossed into this territory by boat, refugees from Norway, outlaws, shunned there. Canada didn't have R.C.M.P. then, just natives...

On Sunday evening in downtown Cathlamet, a group of citizens gathered in front of the Wahkiakum County Courthouse to peacefully protest Saturday's bigotry and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. They sang some songs and had a minute of silence for the people who had lost their lives that day. Here are some of their thoughts: "I'm really pleased with the turnout," Ursula Petralia, who organized the event, said. "We just want to live in peace with each other. I think that all of us want to...
Wahkiakum County's board of commissioners on Tuesday addressed a wide variety of issues ranging from dredging and the county ferry to fish nets and mental health services. Commissioner Dan Cothren reported the county's permit application process for placement of dredge spoils is proceeding well; US Army Corps of Engineers staff have said they're pleased with the plans of the county staff and consulting engineers to complete the permitting. However, Cothren said, the pipeline dredge Oregon will soon be working on a shoal across from Cape Horn,...

Wahkiakum County PUD commissioners heard a variety of reports at their meeting on Tuesday. General Manager Dave Tramblie reported that a crew, in preparation for a potential new customer, had replaced an old water line on the Westend after they found that it was composed of varying sized pipe and numerous fittings. Tramblie said that he purchased 1,000 more automated meter reading meters. He plans to have them installed in Cathlamet, on the east side of the county, in the Elochoman, and in...

Joel McEntire, who teaches science and language arts at John C. Thomas Middle School, is looking for some community members to join him in teaching, challenging, and just playing the game of chess with students in their club at school. When he started the Chess Club in the middle of the 2016-2017 school year, he had no inkling of the kind of turn out he would get. Fifteen students showed up. This year, 25 have already signed up, and school doesn't start until September 5. "I've known the rules...
To the Eagle: There has been no end to the hectoring from our collectivist letter writers the past few months. Most of us in this county voted for @realDonaldTrump and it is sad that the minority here chooses to see us as racist, bigots and rubes. When half of the county's concerns can be dismissed with “Waving the bloody shirt” of the 20th Century, public discourse is stifled. Some have not rethought the European/Swedish utopian fantasy they absorbed in college and it sadly explains their “Fake Solutions” to problems in the 21st Century...
Last week's calendar of events contained an incorrect date for the Oktoberfest at the River Mile 38 Brewery in Cathlamet; the correct date is September 2....
COOLED DOWN--Lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed the cloudier, cooler mornings before the sun came out in the afternoon as that meant things did not get so hot here as they have been inland, and that's fine by me. The heavy marine layer even gave us some damp roads a couple of days from the dew dripping off the trees and beings it's been so dry, even that amount of moisture was welcomed. However, by Saturday evening we were listening to real rain in West Valley and I was totally happy about that. As a matter of fact, I think I even heard my yard...

After 38 years, Bill Faubion has decided to step down from his position as Wahkiakum District Court judge. His tenure will end on August 31. "Law school called my bluff," Faubion said last week. "I had no intention of ever being a lawyer, but my brother talked me into taking the law school admissions test, and I did well on it. Then he talked me into applying for law school, and they accepted me. I wasn't doing anything else, so there I was." "My mother always said, 'When doors open up for you,...
Wahkiakum County is in the market for a new director of the Health and Human Services Department. Present Director Sue Cameron last week sent the board of county commissioners a letter announcing her intention to retire and leave the position effective October 6. Cameron has been director for five years. She has worked in public health for 41 years, and she has also been a county commissioner in Tillamook County, Ore., and is currently a member of the Cathlamet Town Council. Commissioners met Tuesday with Cameron and other department officials...

The Cathlamet Rowing Club was formed when two Wahkiakum residents, Julius Dalzell and Allen Bennett, decided to share their love of boats with others. Dalzell, who grew up on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, spent a lot of time rowing small working boats in the Bay of Fundy. Members of the Wahkiakum County club enjoy rowing, paddling and sailing those same kind of classic small crafts in the Columbia River. The group meets regularly to row, and they gather each New Year's Day for a special...

Julius Dalzell, one of the 2017 Cathlamet Wooden and Classic Boat Show organizers, was a little worried about the turnout when the event opened on a beautiful Saturday morning, but he shouldn't have been. He'd printed 40 more ballots than the year before, and they were gone by noon. "It's a blast," Allen Bennett, another volunteer organizer said. "It's just a labor of love. We just love boats. We've got more diversity than we had last year. We expanded to all types of boats and we've got some...
To The Eagle: The wilds of western Wahkiakum, the "outback" of greater metropolitan Cathlamet, is home to three of my greatest local heroes in the continuing battle against the encroachment of overweening government and bureaucracy. They are: Maury Mooers, for his valiant stand against the Corps of Engineers in the Steamboat Slough Struggle, the late Del Frederickson, who put Grays River back in its banks, and Poul Toftemark, who, with patience and forbearance, stopped Columbia Land Trust's destruction of the Kandoll Road environs. So, in...
