From the Columbia Basin Bulletin As it reviews preliminary results of the 2016 commercial gillnetting and recreational angling season on the Columbia River at its meeting this week, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will also begin considering statutory changes to Columbia River fishery harvest reform that could extend gillnetting on the mainstem river in 2017, beyond the reform deadline. The controversial harvest reform of 2013, also known as the Kitzhaber Plan, would effectively remove commercial gillnetters from the mainstem Columbia...
Editor's note: This story was run last week with a photo of another player who resembles Souvenir. Here it is with the correct photo. To The Eagle: I have observed Mike Backman doing so much for our community over the years, volunteering, etc. He is not a politician and to my knowledge has never conducted county business acting as partisan. He has identified himself as an independent and governed that way. I have respect for Mr. Prestegard, but I am concerned about a partisan of either major party bringing the mess we have at the federal and state level of governance to our county government. I can say, and I believe most would agree, we have had some pretty fair governing...
To The Eagle: Hillary Clinton is not presidential. She and her husband are thieving, conniving politicians. Folks who pay attention are aware of their many and sordid violations. We, many millions of us, are sick and tired of these people and the faltering country we are stuck with. We want our good economy and the general good feeling among our citizenry back! Trump is not perfect, but he is the only alternative for our beloved country. Mike Swift Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: Center line rumble safety strip, Longview to US 101, makes for many small water reservoirs during/after moisture falling. Each reservoir will puddle, creating spray from a passing vehicle, endangering vehicle passed. Plus, these puddles will freeze over and the center line will be like an ice skating rink. Even though the driving surface may be dry, there will be multiple single vehicle incidents due to the ‘rumble’ black icing. Yes, rumble stripping will alert an inattentive driver moving over the center line into oncoming tra...
Last Saturday, the Wahkiakum County Search and Rescue (SAR) conducted a joint training with Cowlitz County SAR on US Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter operations. This was a wonderful opportunity for our local responders to conduct actual hands on training with the USCG. The training began with the arrival of the new USCG J-hawk helicopter. The helicopter is stationed out of Astoria and had no problem finding a good landing site at the Hancock Forest Management sorting yard near Cathlamet. The rescu...
NOT TOO BAD--I am so glad we were able to have a really nice couple of days at the end of last week, as Friday was gorgeous and a good deal of Saturday was nice as well. This gave a nice break from the rain, that we needed, and which had our lawns perking right up, so I wasn't surprised when I heard several lawn mowers running as everybody was trying to get a handle on those uneven lawns and get them looking nice and neat before it was time to put away that lawn mower for the winter. With rain returning by Sunday morning, it was almost a good...

Remarkable strides in recovery have been made for the Columbian white-tailed deer in our area. Evidence of this is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s reclassification of the Columbia River distinct population segment of Columbian white-tailed deer from endangered to threatened. The deer population of the lower Columbian floodplain has experienced significant recovery, increasing from about 400 deer in the early 1970s to almost 1,000 individuals in 2015. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its state and tribal partners have successfully u...

NOT TOO BAD--Last weekend wasn't too bad, as while we had some rain, we also had some dry times, along with some sunshine, so it was certainly better than the weekend before! We even saw the "field lakes" going down at last, so that's always a welcome sight. However, by the time you read this, we are supposedly going back to a rainy streak, so I hope you enjoyed whatever dry time we had, as it looks like the Fall weather, which means, "falling rain," is here! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 27-Nov. 2 are Maury Mooers, Hoby...
