The Washington Department of Transportation is looking for local input on a coming project to paint and repair the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge between Cathlamet and Puget Island. Remarkable strides in recovery have been made for the Columbian white-tailed deer in our area. Evidence of this is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s reclassification of the Columbia River distinct population segment of Columbian white-tailed deer from endangered to threatened. Puget Island resident Carol Kriesel dropped off unused medications on Saturday in Cathlamet. Ginger Hake of the Wahkiakum Community Network and Ernie Schnabler of the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office were on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to collect unused and expired medications. Nearly 30 volunteers showed up to help with the first Tidy the Town event, sponsored by the Pioneer Community Association. The Cathlamet town council on Monday took initial steps to raise water and sewer rates for customers of its utilities. The council is reacting to reports from an accountant and town staff who have stated that current rates aren't high enough to keep the two systems solvent. People will be able to dispose of unused or expired medications this Saturday in Cathlamet. Members of the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office and Wahkiakum Community Network will collect the medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday in the Cathlamet Pharmacy parking lot.
